    HYPER-V question for probably Kari

    Hi there
    quick question on HYPER-V

probably for @Kari as he's the undisputed champion of HYPER-V around here !!!

If I have a VM powered on under HYPER-V can I log off as the Windows user and still have people able to access the HYPER-V VM - assuming of course they have an account on the VM. I.e can the VM run as a background task where users can access it even though the primary W10 user has logged off.

I know this works with server editions of Windows but does it work with Windows 10 Pro for example. I just want after starting the VM for the Windows user to be able to log off while the VM still executes in the background and is acessible to other users over the network.

With VMWARE once the user on W10 Pro who powers on the VM logs off then it shuts down - that's a drawback for what I'm trying to do.

    Thanks

    Jimbo

Don't need to ask @Kari, just try it.

I did and could still save to the VM's shares while logged out on the machine running the VM (Hyper-V, Win10 Pro). I'm sure Kari will know what options are available to fine-tune this, but it works 'as-is' out of the box.

If you look at the Details tab in Task Manager while a Hyper-V VM is running you'll see that all the Hyper-V processes are running under their own unique Username. I'll bet if you do the same while running VMWARE you'll find it uses your username.

    Exactly as @Bree mentioned.

There is no need for any user to be signed in on a Hyper-V server computer, the host PC where virtual machines you want to connect to are running. Assuming that host is connected to network, you can completely manage and run them from another client PC, as well as access shares on them.

About the following screenshots, I am at the moment using the PC AGM-W10PRO03. I've added PC AGM-W10PRO01 as a Hyper-V server on PC 03 to manage and run its virtual machines on PC 01:

After PC 01 was booted, no user has signed in. It's just booted to Welcome / Lock screen and left there. As soon as it was connected to network, I have total control of its virtual machines from PC 03:

Yep, I've been running Hyper-V remotely about 2 years now. No need for logging in on the server computer once all remote trusts are setup properly.

I run VMs on my Asus UX305CA and they are all hosted on my Asus U46SV:
