What's the best way to virtualize Linux Mint 19 under W10 Pro?

    Hi all -

I'm considering virtualizing Linux Mint 19 if possible under W10 Pro, so I need some ideas...

Found this, but it is not exactly entertaining, lol - need an easier way. Virtualbox? Hyper-V?

    Suggestions welcome and thanks!

Linux Mint will run in any mainstream emulator. However, you cannot get sound in Hyper-v with Linux as you can only install Linux in basic mode.

cereberus: Emulator? So Mint for different instruction set exists? I don't think so.

Compumind: There is no "one best type-2 hypervisor for everyone". The most used ones are: vmplayer, vmwksta, virtualbox, hyperv. Compare their properties and select one which fits your needs.

    Hyper-V is type 1 hypervisor.

Strictly technically, yes, you're right. But:

However, unlike guests, the host OS is special in that it has direct access to all the hardware, which means that applications with special hardware requirements can still run without issues in the host OS.

    Hybrid implementation.

    Not only "strictly technically".

To run Hyper-V, system hypervisor must be present and turned on before Windows kernel is loaded. That makes it a genuine type 1 hypervisor.

For type 2 hypervisors, system hypervisor must be turned off before booting to Windows or they do not run. Exception: at least earlier, don't know how it is today because I have no interest in Virtual Box and have not used it in several years, VirtualBox could run 32 bit guest OS even when hypervisor is on.

This allows type 2 hypervisors to run, but as true type 1 hypervisor, Hyper-V can't start virtual machines without system hypervisor:

The difference is extremely clear, not only technicality.

I created a Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon x64 VM using VMware Workstation running in Windows 10 Pro (1709 Build 16299.248) and had no issues at all. This may be because I included the option to add graphic support files at install time:

    Hi Rick -

Will it work under the free VMware product?
Workstation is not free like Linux, lol.

I’m surprised that it won’t fully work with Hyper-V.

Thanks to all for the replies. 😬

    I meant vmware, virtualbox etc.

I don't use it but can't think of a reason why it shouldn't also work with VMware Player.
