    VM

    Good evening,
What is VM exactly and how does it work? I want to run Linux and was told something about VM so that I can run Windows for my other software.

A VM or Virtual Machine, is a computer that runs on a host machine or server. Think of a VM as a computer inside a computer, it shares the resources of the host machine, but is a separate machine inside one operating system.

You can easily create a Linux VM on Windows with free VM tools and be up and running with Linux in a matter of minutes.

    Hey cmmpro1,
I like VirtualBox, I think it's the easiest to use and it's free. Download and install VirtualBox > create your VM > Insert your Linux Mint CD or point your VM's CD drive to the Linux Mint ISO (.iso) that you downloaded > Start the the VM and it will run Linux Mint in live mode. On the Linux Mint Desktop is CD Icon to install it in the VM ... that's basically it.

You want Windows Host - Downloads – Oracle VM VirtualBox

    Here's my current VirtualBox with 3 VM's :)

    Sure, you can :)

I've been using VirtualBox for awhile, so I'm use to it. Obviously, there will be a learning curve for you, but it shouldn't be to bad. This is a VirtualBox VM (2 procs, 2 gb ram, 10 gb hdd), that I just setup using the Linux Mint Cinnamon ISO and the Linux Mint Desktop with CD Icon (Install Now)

Note: The number of procs, ram, hdd size, etc depends on the PC you're installing VirtualBox on.
Note: Remember running the Live CD is only for checking out Linux Mint ... anything you do will NOT be saved.

Yea, I just never really cared for Hyper-V ... I just like VirtualBox, because it seems easier to use :)

Thank you for your help. I am going to install tonight. I might as well install Linux on the computer too. It will be on a dell. Only hang up I have with that computer is that it is a much older box and its somewhat slow. BTW, Does Linux boot faster than MS?

I'm with you on that one as I don't care for it either. I use VMWare though since it's what I learned first and I'm too lazy to learn VirtualBox :)
