Logout warning "Someone else is still using this pc"

Just to make it clear what I'm looking at here are the steps I take to produce this issue.
1. Log into account Novice (user, local account) and allow the startup to complete.
At this point Task manager only lists one User.
2. Right click "Start" > select either "Restart" or "Shut down" > power up
3. Log into Expert (admin, local account)
Task Manager now lists two Users (Expert and Novice); Novice is disconnected.

In "Start" > "User" (Not sure if User it correct it is the icon that lists all users and allows switching accounts) it shows Novice is Signed in.


Thus, for this system, a shutdown does not apparently log the user out.
I now have two ways to avoid the "Someone else is still using this pc" error when logging out. Either log out using Alt-F4, or after logging back in, look for another user logged in, switch accounts, sign out, log back in to the desired account.

I'm going to get back to using Alt-F4 as my favorite way to close down.

While I know this is abnormal, I am surprised that no other user has the same issue! I feel soooo special. ROFL

No, I still cannot reproduce this effect.

I notice that you have GPU columns in Task Manager (I don't).
In particular, I see that Novice (disconnected) has a 'GPU 0 - 3D' entry in the GPU Engine column. I wonder if this is anything to do with it?

Hi, ever since the Fall update i seem to have the exact same issue on one of my laptops. The account that has been used gets 'disconnected' in Windows after clicking shut down from the Start Menu.
When an other account logs on, and finally shuts down the system mentions the other account is still logged on and could lose unsaved work. This person closed all his work and just shuts down normally like always. I can simulate the same behavior from my account.

Ita1, thanks for the link. A post was just provided using the images. I didn't use the Switch Users icon to realize the account was simply logged out when searching for help.

This does appear to be a bug that doesn't effect all computers.

BTW, for all those who want auto-driving cars. I will ignore the thousands of people who have been killed due to commercial plane crashes, flying and on the runway, that have died. I simply want to be proven that computers and programs can be created that are not flawed. After all, from one computer to human, what can go wrong, go wrong, go w....

I am going to mark this solved. It appears to be either a bug in the latest release that does not impact everyone or it is a new feature of windows 10 that has not been implemented on all systems. I'm betting on a bug.

Regardless, the solution is simple, always log out of the account before shutting down or restarting or use Alt-F4 or one of the command prompt commands which can be setup as a shortcut.

I've not suffered this 'bug' and still can't reproduce it, but I have already set up shortcuts to workaround the other new 'feature' in 1709 that does affect all PCs, (apps that reopen after a restart). You may find it more convenient than Alt+F4.

Create a folder named Power, put the shortcuts in that folder, then you can add the folder as a toolbar on the taskbar for easy access.

@ExpertNovice, here's another one to add to the list of those affected (but still not me, however hard I try). For them, the solution was...

...UNSELECT the option to "Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart." Do this for EVERY account on your PC.

I see exactly the same thing as you.
When I restart from my limited user account, back to user - I see only me.
But when I restart admin account - I see both me and admin in the list.
It bothers me, because I dual boot with Windows7 and if it's anything like fast startup or hibernation, i.e. if windows 10 stores on disk what other users are doing, it'll corrupt things. But I don't know if they store what to restart or not or just flag some files.
