    Still no Joy

    Thanks for all the details, simrick. I went through all the steps and reboots, JRT and CCCLeaner but still get the same error trying to switch to a local user (new user). Adding a new family member still shows the error that it can not connect ...

    I did not find any Tweakbits stuff on my system but other than that, I followed the steps exactly.

    Are there any other tricks to try? Any logs that I can attach?

    What's your account page look like?
    Is your MS Account 'Verified'?

    Hi Edwin,
    Mine does show the same as that and I'm not sure what account to use to verify. The MS account that I am using to sign on Windows with is actually one that I would not want to use here but not sure if I need to use that one since it lets me on Windows with it. Ultimately, I want to sign on with a local user, not a MS account.

    Click on the 'Verify' link, it'll ask you for the email you used to originally set up the MS Account in question, enter it, press Next, then it will ask you for a confirmation code that was sent to that email, go and get the Code and enter it in the dialog.
    Then you may be able to switch back to a local account.

    Ok, I tried that, received my code and entered it. Then when I tried to switch to a local account, I got the same 0x80004005 error. ;(

    Please try this "Best Answer" and see if that doesn't kick your MS account into shape.
    Windows 10 microsoft account issue! - [Solved] - Windows 10

    Try the following;

    1) Go in Start==>Settings==>Accounts==>Sign-in Options==> Change Pin

    In this step create the pin. Also change the password there.

    2) Then open any browser and go to https://account.microsoft.com/about to Sign in your Microsoft Account and use the new password which you have changed .

    3) After logging in the Microsoft account click on your Name==>Account settings.

    4) On the next screen, Scroll down to Devices. There you see a symbol of PC below the word 'Devices' and see all in front of the word 'Devices'. Click on 'see all'.

    5) There you see your devices. Remove the device by clicking Remove PC and wait for 5 minutes to sync with your PC. Make sure that you are well connected to Internet so that the PC will sync properly.

    6) After this you go to account in setting to switch back to Local account.

    If not, we will try creating a user with command prompt.

    I could not Add a pin. Clicking on the button did nothing. Also tried to change password but that failed with 'Something went wrong'. I will look at the next option - creating user with command prompt.

    I created a new user with password as described in your link. I could not switch to it, however.

    New User created but ...

    the last operation to create new user with command prompt seems to have worked. I could not switch to it but with a reboot, I had the choice of two accounts, the new local one and the MS account. Problem with the new local one, though, is that it has none of my previous customizations. I tried to use command prompt to create my 'old' local user again but it said it already existed, yet it does not show up as a login option. Any ideas how to get back to my old local user?
