Very long login time on some user accounts

    Hi everyone,

I share a desktop computer with another family member. We have two user accounts, "Matt" (mine) and "John". Both are administrator accounts. Two days ago, when John logged in after I was done using the computer, the "Welcome" screen took way longer than usual (probably ~30s), and was followed by a couple minutes of a completely black screen (with a cursor) before finally showing the desktop. This problem on his account has persisted ever since.

The computer is otherwise perfectly responsive and usable, the boot time is very short, and I can still log into my account in a few seconds. It's also possible to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the task manager in the black screen phase, and it seems to show nothing unusual and very low CPU activity.

I've tried the following, but I'm not sure what to do next:
    • Boot in safe mode: this solves the problem (but I don't know what to do with that)
    • Create another administrator account: the new account has the same problem as John's.
    • Disable every startup program with the task manager (when logged in as John): doesn't solve the problem

The one thing I remember doing that day that may have changed some system configuration was installing KeePass 2. I've removed it since.

Please ask me if you need any other information.

Any pointers would help, thanks a lot!

One user account may have Fast Start enabled, the other may have it disabled.

Thanks for the suggestion! Fast start is enabled on the computer, and if I understand the article you linked correctly, it has to be enabled for either all accounts or none, since it accelerates boot, not session initialization.

Good point! If you have it enabled then it could be that when John shuts down there is a problem that prevents the system shutting down properly so that it starts up without Fast start.

Look at your reliability history and see if there are any clues there.
