As long as you're not using the old account to sign in to anything with anymore, it should be fine to remove it as an alias. You'll still be able to add it as an alias again if you should find something stops working with it removed. :)

Spent the last 5-6 hours on this, but gave up.
    I have 2 accounts:
    - the built admin account
    - a 2nd admin account and also user?

when I disable that one, the desktop entirely changes (default)
half of the number of desktop icons are is gone, in regedit (WinLogon) the old ID is mentioned.

All in all, both accounts seem to be so tied up together, that it is impossible to just keep 1 (the one that I am using to logon) without loosing 'my own' desktop and half of the icons.

Probably this is also the reason that whatever I try, the 1607 update doesn't install. Windows also tried a number of times, went thru the entire setup and in the end tells me that the update was unsuccessful.
(2 accounts, so Windows can't figure out what to do).

What might be worrying me even more: even IF I would freshly install Windows, formatting the drive, etc. it will then resort to the same problem. Have no idea how to avoid that....

Can't be that I am the only one.

That happens when you remove the alias from your Microsoft account?

Could that be the root of Windows not updating to 1607? This in spite of repeated attempts.
Is there a guide as to 'force' the installation of the update?
Yesterday I was in the middle of running a (lengthy) backup and the pc suddenly rebooted to try and install the update.
Else this may be happening again, the update is available and windows wants to install it, but bad luck, it does not
(notification: we couldn't finish installing updates)

That wouldn't have any affect on Windows Update.

As a follow up - my solution has been the following
The account used on my 2nd PC was the one listed under "Email, Calendar and contacts", see my very first screenshot.
I could not remove or change that account. Period.
Solution (in my case) was to reset Windows on my 2nd pc and change the username, userID, etc. to be the same as on
    my 1st PC.
Now, on 1st PC the name/email address under "Email, Calendar and contacts" are the same as 'admin' at the top of Settings->Accounts.

Matter now solved, the use of the 'alias' on my 2nd pc was holding me back of deleting it.
