I'm so furious with myself for messing with the settings on this computer.
My windows 10 will not run a system restore because, it says, my security (Kaspersky) is preventing it - and I should temporally disable it. But I can't see a way to do that and am not sure that I should.
When I sign in now, using my correct sign in formula I get a screen saying I have to consult my system administrator (whoever that is) and when I click OK it signs me off. It takes seven and a half minutes to sign off and re-start. Sometimes even a restart goes through the whole rigmarole again - so all in all it can take 15 minutes to begin.
All I've done is make a trivial problem a major one.
The only solution as far as I can see is to restore the whole thing back to factory settings and lose everything I've downloaded myself. So I'll be back to windows 8 which I hated.

If you like, you could try resetting Windows 10 at boot instead.

I can see the irritation my questions are causing, but I've been 'living with' this for months and its getting worse.
The question has been asked by other people I see, and they have solved it by going to somewhere you call 'netplwiz' (I think). However, I am a complete duffer with computers and have no idea what most of these strange names mean so I can't follow the instructions.
I've typed netplwiz into contana and found a window (I think thats what you call that box that appears?) but the rogue name isn't listed, just me and Admin - so I can't delete it.
Neither can I try a system restore because, although I've tried making my own restore dates, after every time I run a restore I get a message saying it has failed.
I am reluctant to restore to factory settings because I'd lose everything, and the nightmare of recalling all those passwords is enough to drive me to drink. Every time I see the offer of backing up my work I use it - but then I don't know where this backed up work is when I want to restore it. I feel I'll never get my head around this techno babble - can you direct me to a forum that uses plain English and not computer-speak?
(You say there are no dumb questions ....... what about dumb people with degrees in ancient history, we must be the dumbest of the lot!)

The netplwiz option is the same as I posted in post #2 below. If you check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box, do you still get this "incorrect user name and password" message?

    Yes.
Then I'm put back to the page where all the users names appear (myself, others and admin usually) but there's now another 'user' called cross-000 which is at the top of the list and highlighted. When I scroll to 'myself' and enter my password I now get another message advising me to contact my system administrater.
    Windows 10 is rubbish.

I'm not sure what's going on, but I would recommend to back up anything that you don't want to lose, and reset Windows 10 to start fresh.

I have worked out how to get past this, although the original problem isn't solved.

    I switch on
the usual response comes up (incorrect user name and password)
I wait exactly two and a half minutes (time to boil the kettle for a cuppa)
UP POPS THE DESKTOP and I can get in.

Not perfect, but I don't understand you Brink, I'm an elderly Englishwoman and we don't speak the same language, eg why is the word 'boot' used when people mean 'start' and 're-boot' when you mean 're start'? Not getting at you personally because you've been very helpful and patient and I thank you for it - but I really don't understand computerspeak although I'm learning.

    No worries. :)

I just meant "at boot" as being before Windows startup screen after restarting the computer.

I'm glad to hear you have a workaround for now.

Just to verify, did you check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box in netplwiz and click/tap on OK to see if you still get this "incorrect user name and password" message?
