    Lost password (local account)

    Hello -
I have been using a local (non-microsoft) account to sign in to my laptop. I set a four digit pin a few months ago because it's easier to remember and use - however - I have forgotten my actual password. A month or so ago, I attempted to use the 'netplwiz' feature to reset it and was asked to re-start the computer. After doing so - my account was not accessible and I ended up using the recovery tool and rolled it back to prior state.

My question is - How can I reset my password without this happening again? Do I need to use the built-in admin account? The 'netplwiz' tool will not allow me to reset as the 'reset password' button is greyed out. The only other account that exists on my laptop is the 'built-in' admin account. So, should I log out, and log back in to the built-in, or create a 'new user' account? I just don't want to lose everything under my account. I was wanting to change to a 'Microsoft' account, but was asked to enter my 'old' password (which I'm guessing is my local account password), and I don't have it - only the four-digit pin.

Any help would be great! If additional information is needed, I'll be happy to provide! Thanks!!:)

Hi Lisa, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Sign out from your local account, sign in with built-in admin account. Run netplwiz, select your local account and select Reset Password. Doing it from built-in admin you will not be asked the old password.

You can now sign out from built-in admin and sign in to your local account with new password.

    Kari,

Thank you!! I was going to proceed that way, but wanted to make sure I wouldn't lose my entire profile! I made the mistake of changing it this way when signed in with my local account and messed everything up. Thanks so much!! :)
