    So sorry you are still having problems. As none of the suggestions so far have worked for you, I think you are going to need to do a clean install and start afresh, setting up the account in the way that you want it. My guess is that you will want a local account with no password. You will need to set up without inputting your Microsoft account email and leave the password blank for any user name that you choose. Once you do have the system set up and your programs and apps installed, I would advise you to make a system image and a recovery disk and activate system restore.

    Warning: without a Microsoft account you will lose all ability to synchronise between devices and to have a working OneDrive cloud storage for backup of your system settings and favourites etc.

    In your original post you did say that you did not want to reinstall windows, however, I can't see how you can get to where you want to be without starting afresh and removing all evidence of a Microsoft account.

    Thank you freeman3020. I was having exactly the same problem - after changing from a Domain to a Workgroup I could not log in as Windows 10 decided I needed to change my password, but *every* password that I tried failed the complexity test - hence I was locked out.

    Your solution (remove HP Protect Tools) solved the problem. The only issue was how to remove HP Protect Tools when I couldn't even log in. The solution to that was a variant of a solution found here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...20893dd?auth=1. The variant was that I had to create a new user that did not require a password in order to be able to login - net user debug /add /passwordreq:no

    Removing HP Protect Tools also solved another long standing problem - my computer refused to go to sleep.
