    Duplicate user name at login

appeI'm running Widows 10 on my MacBook via Parallels Desktop. When the W10 login screen appears, I get my user name appear and it logs itself in but is declined. Next, my user name is displayed twice and I click the top one and enter my PIN number and I'm logged in. I would like to delete the second user name display.

Hello Bob, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

It sounds like you may have set Windows to automatically sign in to your account at startup using netplwiz, but may have entered the password incorrectly or changed the password or computer name afterwards. This could cause what you are seeing.

If you wanted to automatically sign in, then go through netplwiz to set it up again.

If not, then make sure the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box is checked.

I use VMWare Fusion rather than Parallels but had the exact same (duplicate user) issue. Both products try to be cute and store activation from bootcamp and apply them when running as VM. This doesn't work with Windows 10 upgrade activation.

What might be interesting for you is that you need a Windows 10 retail key. An upgrade one will not do. You can activate either bootcamp or VM with an upgrade but not both. I tried upgrading both VM and bootcamp from 7 separately and it does not work - only one will be accepted. Both your VM and real hardware are trying to use the same key with a different HWID.

You might get a Windows 10 retail key for free by phoning up through slui 4 as long as you already have a retail license for an earlier version (although it may take several calls until they understand - I've just had many "the line is bad, please call back" or "upgrade again from Windows 7" answers). Eventually you do get through to someone who understands and it does work once they give you the key. They acticvate the bootcamp, you then log on using the VM, do the phone activation robot and all is fine.

Alternatively you can buy a retail W10 key which also works and considering I've spent about 4 hours on the phone might be cheaper (certainly more enjoyable).

Thank you both for your help, I used "Brink's" solution and it worked a treat.

    didn't answer the question

I too have this issue, and fixed it the way you describe.
There are still superfluous names on the start menu which may or may not slow down bootup.
    Can they be removed?
    thanks

    Hello,

I wanted to have a auto login but I'm still having the same problem as BobFromBristol even after following your instructions with two duplicate user names. Is there any other solutions?

    Thanks!

Hello Ray, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

It sounds like you may not have the correct password entered in netplwiz if it's not automatically signing you in. If this is the case, then you would just need to setup netplwiz again using the correct password for the account.

    Hello,

I've repeated those steps with the same results. It tries to auto login with a duplicate account first but fails with an incorrect password. When I try the first account and enter the same password I set I log in with no problem. The duplicate account disappears when I disable auto log in. The problem seems to be this second account even when I enter my user name and password it's incorrect? How could that be? It's the same name as the first one it's very confusing.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

I am having the exact same problems as Ray60. I have tried the netplwiz 'solution' several times but that has not altered a thing.

When Windows first boots it tells me that my password is incorrect. I then select a duplicate account name that is displayed and enter my pin and I am let in. But when I search for a duplicate account within the Control Panel it does not exist. I have the only account and it is, of course, with administrator's access. What gives?
