microsoft account to local account on 2 desktops and 'whoami' differs

    folks,
i bought 2 refurbushed thinkcentre desktops with win10 pro and set them up and they defaulted to microsoft account logins.

i converted 1 desktop to local account, worked perfect, c:\Users indicates the local account username,
    - and if i issue cmd {and run as administrator}, the prompt is c:\windows\systme32>whoami i get 8-srvr\ron; if i issue cmd {but do not run as administrator}, the prompt is c:\Users\ron>whoami i get 8-srvr\ron. THIS IS GOOD

i converted (tried) 1 desktop to local account, half-worked, 'Settings\YourInfo indicates 'ron' as local account + administrator, but the login stayed as microsoft account login with pin AND c:\Users shows the 5character pseudonym of the microsoft account email.
    - and if i issue cmd {and run as administrator}, i again get the prompt as c:\windows\systme32>whoami i get 7-srvr\ron; if i issue cmd {but do not run as administrator}, the prompt is c:\Users\rlo03 (the 5character pseudonym)>whoami i get 7-srvr\ron. THIS IS 1/2 GOOD.
-i have a local account with a microsoft account login, and my c:\Users remains under 'rlo03' and not 'ron'.

i would like to remove the miscrosoft account login, drop the microsoft account email reference and convert the c:\Users\rlo03 to c:\Users\ron using the procedure that references the SID to do the renaming in the registry.
the question is ...where do i start... so i do not lose all the stuff in documents/downloads/etc/etc that i put in the 2nd desktop already?

i believe i see how to do it, but not quite the safest place to pick up the string and start the process.
any suggestions would be helpful, thanks, ron

My Microsoft Account uses the first 5 characters of the E-Mail Account I used when setting up the computer, not the display name I chose. When I later added a Local Account it assigned the User name I chose, nothing to do with the E-Mail. The 2 Users have to be at least one character difference between them. Each User has a different Profile.

Consider performing clean install after manually saving files.

Another option is a custom install which saves files to Windows.old.
Important files are restored from Windows.old.

Do backup your drivers before considering any Windows reinstallation.
Doing so can save a stack of work & avoid headaches.

I agree that reinstalling Windows for used computers is worthwhile since you cannot be certain what has been done before and what files have been stored on it.
Personally, I'd make system images beforehand so I could get back to square one if it all went haywire.
Check their activation status first in Settings, Updates, Activation. If they have been activated with a digital licence then you can Clean install & they will automatically re-activate afterwards when you go online without any activation action being needed on your part.

Do note that running WhoAmI as Admin reports the UserName of the Admin user account not the user account you are logged in with.

You don't mention which method you used.

    convert the c:\Users\rlo03 to c:\Users\ron
I'm not sure what your objective is.
You're trying to change the username of rlo03 on the same computer as the one that already has the user ron?
Or on a different computer that does not already have the user ron?

Personally, I would always create new (local) user accounts in such circumstances and then copy across the old user's files and as many of its settings as I can. I then leave the old user account to gather dust just in case I have left something behind.

almost there to unscrew my screw-up

berton/zbook/try3 --> thanks for the responses, apologize for confusion, let me try to add some thoughts.
    1. for the desktop that is '1/2 good':
-- somehow i added the local acct but got stuck keeping the microsoft acct login {i followed a microsoft process: start/settings/accounts/family & other users/add someone else/i don't have this person's sign-in info/add a user w/o a microsoft acct.
-- got the local acct, it was added automatically as an admin acct; but somehow the login stayed as the original microsoft acct
    2. reading this suggestion:
-- How to Change the Name of a User Profile Folder in Windows 10
When adding a new user account in Windows 10, a profile for the account is automatically created when the user signs in to the new account for the first time.
    -- the profile didn't get created for 'ron'; when i re-boot, the login stayed as 'rlo03' from the microsoft acct along with the email acct i used to load win10 {the desktops are refurbished from SytemsLiquidation, come with win10 pro and you need to do setup}
    3. the Brink article above is what i need to follow - just as you folks suggest
    4. the idea is what i do first, and then the nexts
    5. the objective is to eliminate the microsoft acct, eliminate the email acct which i created ONLY to satisfy the microsoft process, AND SAVE everything that sits in c:\Users\rlo03 by moving to c:\Users\ron

so far i did the following:
    6. created a restore point
    7. did system image & disk image backups using aomei backupper; verified the disk image image, cut the bootable usb {but am still figuring out how to test a restore w/o killing the system - this is the 'chicken' phase - the bootable usb is supposed to be a win-pe process that goes straight into rebuilding everything, but i would rather rebuild onto something other than the internal drive on the desktop

i think i need to do next steps this way:
    8. follow the Brink article with the SID process and rename the 'rlo03' as 'ron' in the registry
-- so the question: 'ron' is the admin, if i do cmd (run as admin) 'whoami' i get 7-srvr/ron
-- but right now, 'ron' is not listed in c:\Users\..., only thing there now is c:\Users\rlo03
-- it seems i need to create a profile for 'ron' BEFORE i can give it the SID of 'rlo03', since it wasn't created 'automatically' as suggested by microsoft
---- and why is that? because i can't login as 'ron' since it keeps being presented to me with the microsoft acct 'rlo03' and the 'pin'.

    so, 2 'chicken' things:
    9. test the backup onto something else - suggestions?
    10. create a profile for 'ron' THEN do the SID swap-a-roonie - how to create profile manually for 'ron'?

    thanks guys
    ron {a newbie here, did the design work, but never the programming, so time to learn python & more, just turned 77 and don't want a fuzzy brain}

Consider starting with a fresh installation and creating only local accounts.

    This generally:
cleans problems with a prior installation
    cleans bloatware
    has optimal performance

    Ron,

I suggest you create new local user accounts for everything you need, make ones you want into Admins, copy whatever files you want into your new accounts then let the existing accounts sit there gathering dust.
