Locked out of my Windows 10 system -TriBoot

    I have a HP Probook with 3 OS's

    1- Linux Mint
    2- Windows 10 Pro
    3- Windows 11 Education

I can boot into Mint or 11 no problems but something has corrupted my 10

When I get to the sign in screen I am presented with my user name and picture and asked for my PIN

When I enter it I get the message Your device is offline. Try a different sign-in method.

I can then hit OK and click on more options and choose the Windows Hello feature for my face

When I do that I see my camera light turn on but Windows 10 says Couldn't turn on the camera and goes back to asking for my PIN.

I do not have a password setup only the PIN and there are no alternate accounts

I do not have a password setup
When you installed Win 10 you will most likely have created a password.

Using a PIN does not make your password redundant. Indeed, there are cases where Windows ALWAYS prompts for that password. Sadly a number of users lose track of that password.

    there are no alternate accounts
You might try enabling the built-in administrator account - tutorial available in the searchable Tutorials section.

    Do you have
    - any restore points available? It's normally possible to run System Restore by booting your PC from a Win 10 install disk. I have no idea how a multiple boot scenario affects that.
    Tutorial available.

    - a 3rd party disk image you can restore.
The routine and regular use of disk imaging is endlessly recommended here. This can help you recover from unrecoverable unbootable cases by restoring your O/S to a previous good state; this also protects you from e.g. disk failure, ransomware.

    Hi MannyLNJ,

Have you tried adding another user (admin) using command prompt ?

Or you can try various boot cd options that will help to delete any passwords linkd to your specific user or you can add new admin user with password from its gui.

If there was a password created for the account then the sign in screen should be giving me the option to enter it. My only authentication options are PIN and Windows Hello.

I did create a virtual machine of this system onto an external drive before having this issue. However I am unable to successfully boot the vm in Hyper-V when I boot into Windows 11

I will try the inbuilt administrator account

Thank you very much for your reply.

    AGAIN
    - do you have any System Restore points?

If so using one (offline via a Win 10 boot disk) should be your first thought.

    Considering:
Your device is offline. Try a different sign-in method.
    See:
How to Fix the “Your Device Is Offline Try a Different Sign-In Method” Error in Windows

    Password reset: see

    Thank you.

I'm going to have to abandon this issue. The laptop suffered from a fall today and now I can't boot any OS. I think the SSD took damage because I was able to swap it with another SSD and install windows. I had tried just reseating the existing SSD and it did not help
