    Rename admin folder

I already have an admin account on this PC named "sam" but my folder is named samfl (the first 5 letters in my email). I want the name of that folder to be sam. I have 2 other W10 PC's with exactly that scenario. I don't know why this is so hard but I already had to re-install once when the PC wouldn't let me sign back in after trying some methods I found on the web.

I must have done this before, but I don't remember how, or maybe somethings changed? This is Windows 10 Pro Ver 22H2

When you sign in with a Microsoft Account (Email Address) Microsoft truncates the Email name to the first few letters.

First create a System Image of your computer using Third Party software like Macrium Reflect and save that image to a USB HDD. If something goes haywire, you can easily restore the image instead of reinstalling.

Follow these steps to Rename your Microsoft Account name https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-a618f96ef1d5

It is a little easier to do this if you created a Local Profile login.

Double check with Brink on this one:

Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10

    1) Make both accounts are Administrator accounts.
    2) Using the information from the link, log into "samfl" and rename "sam" to something else, such as "sam1".
    3) Log out of "samfl", and log into "sam1".
    4) Do the same process again for the "samfl" account to rename it to "sam".

(so in summary, we rename the existing "sam" folder to something else, so we can rename "samfl" to "sam".)

I hope you understand what I'm saying.

As this is a procedure not to be undertaked lightly (a bit like DIY brain surgery, perhaps?) and you have already experienced some trauma, please take careful note of what the tutorial says near the beginning:

It is highly recommended to create a system image before doing the steps in this tutorial to be able to quickly restore the image to undo the steps if needed since renaming a user profile folder name may have unknown side effects. For example, some programs not referencing the new profile folder name.

How to Create and Restore a System Image Backup with Macrium Reflect
You are new to the forum, so you may not have noticed how the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging of at least all of the O/S partitions is endlessly recommended.

E.g. free versions of Macrium Reflect, Hasleo Backup, Aomei Backupper - saved e.g. to large enough external drive.

With that done you can restore your system to 'as was'.

Thanks to all for fast responses. Clicking on the link "Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10" brings up a 15 step process.
I will try it today and get back here after creating a restore point and system image.

I hope it works out for you.
Do be aware that you are going to do the 15-step process twice:

    1) renaming the current “sam” folder to something other than “sam”, (15-step process)

    2) renaming “samfl” to “sam” (another 15-step process)

I got through most of the procedure .... I changed the registry entry for samfl to sam ... no problem. But, I have tried everything I can think of to change the user folder name, NO GOOD.
Logged in as either sam1 (admin account) or Administrator trying to change the name in file explorer I get ... file in use. Same result running file explore as admin (you have to find the file explorer exe file in (C:\Windows and right click it).
Also no go with Rename command from elevated command prompt or (elevated) Power shell. Different syntax in Power shell as you know. From there I get ... Access denied. I'm many hours into this and nothing is letting me rename this user folder.
The only thing I see is my file explorer window is not showing me the little shield icon by the rename option. But I should have been able to rename it Logged in as Administrator or user sam1 which has admin rights. I give up for today

Hmh, I see. So there's that little bug you're experiencing,

Maybe for tonight you can message Brink with a link to this post, and ask him what solution he would suggest for that. And tomorrow, on a new day, you can log back in here and see what Brink suggests, and give it another go with what he has as a solution.

I hope for the very best and that you can get this task completed soon.

Which account were you logged in to when you tried to change the folder name?

    Did you follow this?
2 Sign in to any administrator account on the PC that you are not changing its user profile folder name.
Which means if the account whose user profile name you wish to change is the only admin account on your PC, you would need to create ANOTHER admin account and log in to that.

Otherwise you could change the folder name from 'outside' Windows - e.g. by booting to a command prompt, or booting your PC from a live boot disk.

@Brink - Hi Shawn, poster seeks your help.. thanks!
