Being forced to enter a new logon password

On my surface pro 2 i am being told to change my password before i can log on. I do not have a password and do not want to start using one.
Is there anyway around this please. It is not being asked for on my Lenovo
I cannot logon to get my computer details. The surface pro is only about 5 weeks old.
I cannot even get to the on screen key board

    Thanks

What do you mean that it wants you to change your password?

I'd also like to see an explanation. Perhaps you could take & post a photo of the dialog giving you those instructions.

I suspect that you'll have to comply for now and then sort things out afterwards in two stages.

Stage 1 - Stop your password [or lack of it] expiring
When you are back in, run this command using your own username & post the 5 lines about passwords.
    Code:
    net user denis
The response will look like this:-
    User name denis
    Full Name
    Comment
    User's comment
    Country/region code 000 (System Default)
    Account active Yes
    Account expires Never

    Password last set 09/12/2015 13:39:45
    Password expires Never
    Password changeable 09/12/2015 13:39:45
    Password required No
    User may change password Yes

    Workstations allowed All
    Logon script
    User profile
    Home directory
    Last logon 09/09/2023 13:52:01

    Logon hours allowed All

    Local Group Memberships *Administrators
    Global Group memberships *None
    The command completed successfully.

    All the best,
    Denis

Whilst you can arrange to skip the logon prompt (once you've sorted out your current problem) there are circumstances in which you will always be required to provide the password- which you must not forget- else you'll be back here asking for help...

E.g. Safe Mode, Offline System Restore....

Thank you all for your replies
Checking online, there are numerous accounts of passwords expiring. I have not ever used a password on w10 on my Lenovo aio or other computers. Why on this machine.
When trying to enter a new password the onscreen keyboard did not appear but it does so now.
I cannot open the computer to take a screen shot as suggested. When i press the old signin button i then get the screen back with a message "your password has expired and must be changed"
Is this MS trying to get even more control over us?

    As Try3 said:

    - I.e. use a camera or phone to take a photo (note size limits for uploads to tenforums).

Is your account local or a MS account?

This problem aside.. with any of your PCs on which you claim never to have used a password, what happens when you boot to Safe Mode? I'm really curious..

(Yes, I know it's possible to install Win 10 without specifying a password- is that what you've done?)

I am not sure about the type of account, how do i check? I just never used a password on the initial setup. People use the computers who would never remember the password
As for safe mode, i have never used it and not sure what it is.
Will see about getting a picture
    Thanks

Safe Mode on Win 10 is a mode you can select to boot into with the simplest possible configuration and basic drivers.

The idea is that if you can't boot normally, you may be able to boot to Safe Mode
    - to do some diagnostics
    - maybe fix the problem.

Here are some ways to do that:
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

One way- from the logon screen e.g. - is to click the Power button bottom left on the screen, then SHIFT + left click Restart.

Look at Option 1- click Troubleshoot.
    Then Advanced Options.
    Then Startup Settings
    Then press 4

Your PC should restart, then present a lock screen and a login screen.

I'm interested at that point whether you need a password or not on a PC installed without a password.

Hopefully it's consistent and doesn't require one.

Note: Most browsers have some sort of safe mode too, where they can be launched with no extensions running. Same idea.

    -----------------------------------------
    MS account or local account.

You can find out which you are logged in with, but you can't log in...!
How to Tell if Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10

The introduction there gives a simple statement about what each type of account is.
You would have made that choice when you installed Win 10.

If you have other PCs which are set up similarly you can use the above to check.

Thank you dalchina., worked a treat. It opened a login screen for a reset disc wich i could open without entering a password.
    Computer seems to working ok.
Looks like i have a local account. I have never opened a MS account on any of my computers and will resist ever opening one.
Will have a look at what Try3 suggested above. Do not want to restart the computer at present incase i have same problem again.
Thanks will get back to you later.

All seems to be working ok now. When i start, it does not show any signin screen, opens straight into desktop.
    Hope it stays like it.
Not sure how to do what Try3 suggested. Am not computer savvy, so will wait and see what happens unless anybody has any suggestions.
    thanks

Not sure that you got to Safe Mode as you mention a reset disk..

    Try3 & net user:

    1. Open file explorer.
    2. In the address bar type/copy & paste
    %userprofile% (press enter)
    3. Note the string of letters after 'Users'
    4. Open a command prompt
    (e.g. win key + r, cmd.exe (enter) )
    5. at the command prompt enter
    net user string
    - where string is the string of letters from (3)
    and press 'enter'

Post a screenshot of the result.
