    Cannot Change Account Picture??

My account picture has been blank for a while, there was a point when it was an actual picture but I cannot remember how long ago it was, I just kept logging in with the default grey profile picture since it changed.

But today, when I went to change it in Account Settings, it refused to save.
    Cannot Change Account Picture??-accountpictureerror.png

I tried uploading a picture from my computer and taking a picture with my camera, both resulted in the same error message.

I tried deleting contents from two locations and restarting:
    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures

Same error message. Is there something in the Registry I need to modify to get this to work or is there something else broken in my installation? I am using Windows 10 Version 21H1

There were issues with Windows spotlight in older builds, you have a prehistoric build, updating to a version from this century should cure your issue.

It is unclear to me whether you're referring to hardware of software. But I assure you I am using the latest build Windows Update is able to give me. I don't turn updates off, so I should be getting them as they come in.

As far as hardware goes, this is not a hardware issue. My hardware may be dated, but that has no effect on User Account Pictures.

I would really appreciate a genuine response in the future, not one dripping of sarcasm; it doesn't help me or anyone else.

Since "Windows Spotlight" is clearly a Windows feature i'm referring to Windows software, you are on a 21H1 windows build which is NOT the most recent build windows update offers, current version is 22H2 19045.3393.

If you perceive constructive help as sarcasm then you need to adjust your sensitivity filter before you come looking for help. The answers you get may not always be what you'd prefer them to be.

You literally told me to update to a version from this century. Maybe if you didn't treat me like a ****ing caveman I wouldn't respond the way I did.

If you have an issue with my current build go yell at Windows Update because I don't turn it off and that's what I have. If there's a way to fix it so I have the most recent build, let me know. Thank you.

You can do an In-Place Upgrade to get to the up-to-date Windows version...
Psst... this is a Pennsylvania secret. Don't tell anyone. [just kidding]

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" and/or "updates" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
If you had a backup from before this problem occurred, you wouldn't be reading this.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect for Home Use
Free Backup Software for Windows | AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.
The ISO must be created in the same language as you are using in Windows, to be able to keep your Programs and Files.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

It will probably take about an hour on your computer.

Just to keep everyone updated so anyone finding this doesn't wonder if I ever solved my issue

My account was signed in as a Microsoft Account. No I don't know when it happened; could have been accidental or after an update. Once I changed it to a Local Account I was able to change the picture.
