I changed the registry as instructed, but no dice. I'd just reinstall Windows, but there's "a problem" with my backup drive. (How I love vague error messages.)

Enabling the Built-in Admin account is probably the only way of avoiding a clean install.
    - Are you certain that you are following the tutorial's Option 5 precisely?
    - Are you certain that you are loading the correct hive in Option 5 Step 5?
    - Are you certain that the Built-in Admin [username Administrator] is not appearing as an option at the login screen?
I have not experienced or seen reports of this procedure failing before and cannot imagine what the problem might be.

Please post a screenshot of the message telling you there's a problem with your backup drive and explain at what stage the message appears.

You can use Hiren's bootCD PE to enable Admin account.

Boot your computer with Hiren’s BootCD PE.
Goto Start Menu -> Securiy -> Passwords -> NT Password Edit
Open your SAM file (It is usually located in C:\Windows\System32\config\SAM).
Click your username and the click ‘Unlock’.

Reboot your system to login to Admin account.

    Download | Hiren's BootCD PE

@Try3 of course I'm uncertain; I don't use regedit often. As for the backup drive, the error comes up when I run File History; a subject for a different thread.
