Is there another way of simply moving everything from the source to the target user? Perhaps by using an elevated command line or a batch file?

You can, but you won't be able to rename any other account on the computer with "admin".
Hi again, I'm on another computer and having problems renaming an old profile folder name.

I followed all of the above instructions and ran into an error in Step 12 (in Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10) which is renaming the old profile folder name to a new profile folder name. The error is that I can't rename the old profile folder name because of an open file in the old folder (I paraphrased the error message). How do I fix this error? For what it's worth, the old folder contains a OneNote folder which syncs to the cloud.

    Hello mate,

Be sure you are signed out of the account you are wanting to rename its profile folder, and signed in to another admin account.

If you are, then see if booting into Safe Mode without network with the other admin account may allow you to rename the profile folder.

Hi, the new account I created is 'admin2'. The old account I want to change is 'bofhlusr outlookcom'. I want to change 'bofhlusr outlookcom' to 'admin'.

I logged in to 'safe mode' to the new account 'admin2'. When I log-in I only have two log-in choices: 'admin2' and 'bofhlusr outlookcom'.

From the User Account option in the Control Panel in safe mode, I tried renaming 'bofhlusr outlookcom' to 'admin' but it wouldn't let me. When I click on the 'bofhlusr outlookcom' account I only have 3 choices:

    1. Change the account type
    2. Delete the account
    3. Manage another account

From the administrator command line, I type 'whoami' and I get 'c:\laptop-51csurj8\admin2'. I get similar results using %userprofile%.

How do rename 'boflhusr outlookcom' to 'admin'?

This sounds like a Microsoft account you want to rename instead of a local account.

Yes, it is a Microsoft outlook.com account. I tried to change it to a local account but it wouldn't let me.

I logged out, re-started the PC, and tried to log back in by selecting 'bofhlusr outlookcom' (the other choice is 'admin2'). That didn't work. All I get is a 'sign-in' screen. I clicked on 'sign in', but it would just cycle back to the first login screen. So now, I don't have access to 'bofhlusr outlookcom' which is the old profile I want to change to 'admin'.

What happened when you tried to switch your Microsoft account to a local account like in the tutorial below? Any error messages?

I don't remember exactly. I don't think the option was available which is why I logged out and re-started the PC.

Edit: I shut down the PC. Now when I login to 'bofhlusr outlookcom' I get the sign-in screen again. But this time, I get another screen asking me to "Search for app in the Store. You need to install an app for this task...". It gives me two choices: "Yes" or "No".

Selecting either, does nothing. It just cycles back to the first login screen.

Edit2: Logging in to 'admin2' and going to c:\users, I see a folder of 'admin2' but nothing for 'bofhlusr outlookcom'. That's probably why I can't login to 'bofhlusr outlookcom'.

Maybe I should just start over. That is, delete the user 'bofhlusr outlookcom' and create a new administrator account called 'admin'. If I restored the 'bofhlusr outlookcom' folder from an image backup, will I be able to copy the folder contents to the new 'admin' account or will I run into permission issues?
