Take of log on password to donate PC

I got a windows 7 computer given to me with windows 10 professional installed.
I used it for a while, but now I want to pas it on to my niece.
I wanted to remove the log-in/password requirement, but it did not work.
I did uncheck the box in netplwiz, but the apply button stayed grey and the OK button did not do anything.
I do not dare to use the regedit way of trying to do it.
I did update the windows to the latest version.
I would be grateful for detailed instructions as how to go about this.

Personally, I am a big fan of the Microsoft Sysinternals Autologon program to make this task super easy.

Give it a try, I think that you will like it.

    You can find it here:

Hi, I tried to use/download the app, but obviously I did something wrong.
I have very little PC knowledge.

Johannes, you said that you tried the app but believe that you did something wrong. However, you never described what happened. Did you get any sort of error message? Is it simply failing to logon?

So, just to clarify, you want to put in the username to be automatically logged in, the machine name, and the password for that user. Once all that is in place, click on "Enable".

If that is not working, can you confirm that you are using the same username and password when you logon to that machine? We need to make sure that the username and password you are providing works.

I will try that again, I used the PIN for password.

I tried the password I thought I had, but I get wrong password or user name.
Is there a way to retrieve it since I can use the PIN.

This all seems overly complicated if all you want to do is pass the PC on to a family member.

What I would do is create a new local user account in the name of your niece, giving it a blank password and, most importantly, make this account an administrator. You could then sign in to this new account and delete your old account. This will delete not only your account but also all your personal files and data.

Add Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10

Change Account Type in Windows 10

Delete User Account in Windows 10

At start up Windows will try to sign in as the last user that was signed in, and if this account has no password it will sign straight in and go to the desktop without prompting for a password.

    I got it done.
    Great, thank you very much.
