Login screen/prompt doesn't pop up after waking from sleep

It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes after waking my laptop from sleep mode the login prompt won't show. I then have to manually turn the laptop off and on.

Anyone else ever have this issue? Any insight?

Just to be clear, are you saying that the screen remains dark rather than waking up from sleep so that you cannot see the logon screen?

If that is the case, please verify that you are using a Lenovo provided display driver rather than a driver provided by the maker of the display adapter (Nvidia, Intel, etc.).

I have an ASUS laptop that exhibits this same behavior. It uses Intel graphics built into the CPU rather than a discrete GPU. It works fine when I use the ASUS provided display driver, but not if I use the latest driver directly from Intel.

NOTE: Recently Intel began noting in their release notes that their newest drivers will leave in place OEM customizations. So, in theory, you could install the driver from the laptop manufacturer first, and then upgrade over it using the latest Intel driver. I have not tried this, but out of sheer curiosity, I may give this a shot in the morning to see if this really works.

Please do let me know if this info helps at all.

Sorry, I should have been clearer, but I was in a rush.

The screen does turn on and the background image can be seen but the login prompt/screen won't initialize.

Also, the pointer and mouse are responsive, so the system isn't frozen. Odd.

    Thanks.

Yeah, that is odd. Did you try pressing ALT + CTRL + DEL on that screen to see if it brings up the logon prompt?

If that still is not helping, try checking the display driver as I mentioned anyway. I'm not sure that the symptom would always be exactly like I experienced so it's worth a shot.

    I agree with H.
    - Display driver corruption can have very odd symptoms and this might be one of them on this particular occasion.
    - Reinstalling the display driver will overwrite any corruption that has occurred [merely checking for updates would not].

If that does not fix it then check
    - if the problem happens in Safe mode - Boot into Safe Mode - TenForumsTutorials, and
    - If the problem happens for another user account [even if you have to create one for this purpose].

Running SFC would not be a waste of time.
    SFC-DISM - TenForumsTutorials
Use Option 3 including, if there are irreparable errors, going online to run the DISM command explained at the end of Option 3.

I agree completely with what Denis is saying, but he has introduced a new possibility I had not considered - a corrupt display driver. Just to be clear, and explain a little bit further on this topic, I was thinking about instances where the OEM modified the display driver in such a way as to require that their version, and only their version, of the display driver be used.

I'll go back to the example of my ASUS laptop. I can clean install Windows with a brand new, freshly downloaded display driver from Intel, but even then, my display will always remain black once sleep has been entered. The computer is running fine, the screen just never wakes up. This happens because ASUS makes modifications to the display driver that render the Intel provided drivers unusable on this system.
