Your Hotmail Account settings are out of date

Thought I would see if anyone has discovered a solution or encounters this constant error. There is quite a bit of insider feedback but no good answers.
MS alerts me that my account is out of date then I enter my PIN and my mail downloads. A day or so later same thing again, some reason it will not stick. Don't really want to create another account, repair install, reinstall or do W11 yet. Will appreciate any input and thank you.

Where are you seeing this message?
Are you running an insider version of Windows?
That message is usually seen within an email client when said app doesn’t support 2FA so an app specific password is required to access the email.
Have you tried deleting the email account & creating it again, if the email app accepts OAth2 then it will ask you to confirm you wish to allow the app to access your account by signing in with your MS account.

Mostly it is a notification in settings that leads to the Windows Mail APP, also seen it in Outlook.com and Insider Feedback, just about anywhere my MS Account is required. Currently 22H2 and on the Insider Release Preview since a new Windows installation in 12/2021, had the error a few weeks now. Sorry but how do you mean deleting the email account? I have had that MS address about 40 years, so kind of partial to it.

Deleting it from within the email client then setting it up again.
If you’re running an insider version of Windows then this may be a bug so should be reported via the feedback app.

Thank you, I was thinking of deleting the mail app and reinstalling it so I'll try that first then if no joy I will remove the MS account from this device, I think I have done that in the past without any repercussions.
There's a lot of talk about it on Insider Feedback but so far that's all it is.

I only get such messages occasionally on average less than once per year.
Hotmail = Outlook Mail = Microsoft Account.

    1. Clear Cookies, autofill form data, or specifically ones related to MS Outlook, live and so forth.
    2. Got to Outlook settings > General and review connected devices.
    3. Got to Control Panel > Credential Manager > Remove relevant Web/Windows Credentials.

If using a Mail client then remove the Account and set it up again.
Basically clear everything that might be holding old data.

Thank you for the great ideas! Just loaded 22H2 Thursday and have not seen the glitch yet, so going to wait a bit before I try the suggestions. Besides seen it go away and return before.

l got the notice again over the weekend, uninstalled/reinstalled the Mail & Calendar App (which deletes the MS account), wiped everything that was suggested, and it showed up again today.

I will just keep searching a fix and appreciate all comments. Besides it's a minor nuisance, I set up a 4-digit pin a while back to deal with it and I plan to clean install W11 this fall.

Highly suspicious of this message as being genuine.

Does it refer to which account, by name ? Are you using a different MS account for Windows (cf. email client)?

Also seen in Ms Outlook - how/where?

Thought that to at first so ran all the scanners but no infections were found.
Sorry keep forgetting to get snapshots, but it looks legit and just displays "Your Hotmail settings are out of date". It pops a notification in action center which opens the Mail APP which has the scrolling dots across the top (like it can't connect), there is a yellow banner at the top of the APP with a fix it button. That button opens the MS verify your identity popup (like when you access your settings page on microsoft.com), I enter my PIN and the Mail APP downloads.
I only have the one Hotmail/Outlook account and no aliases. I have other emails (Gmail, Spectrum, etc.) but none of them are synced together. I don't believe I have seen the error at Outlook.com but I rarely use it because the MS Mail & Calendar App is sufficient for my needs.

This problem has been around since 2017, it appears to be linked to 2-Step authentication and or how the mail apps sync with outlook.com.
