    Delete User Profile Greyed Out

As an administrator I sometimes delete old user profiles on machines. Up until recently I could easily do this with System Settings / About/ Advanced /Advanced tab / User Profiles and then Delete for any of the ones listed. After recent updates were applied now that option has been greyed out. I don’t know why, but I assume this is a mistake on Microsoft’s part. I know it’s updates that causes this because I recall backing off some recent ones and the option to delete returned. But I need to stay relatively current. Have others run up against this? Is there a fix?

Hi, first, I too am on latest 21H2 build and very recently deleted a standard user account whilst logged into my normal admin account.

Second, if you have already searched tenforums for similar reports, you may have noticed there probably aren't any (well, none I've seen). So I suggest

is perhaps a premature assumption, although I note your comment about presumably uninstalling certain updates helping you.

See if this discussion prompts any ideas:

Which account are you actually logged in to, based on the above, when you are trying to delete the other?
Do you see any message in red mentioning 'your organization'?

What do you see if you go here:

    Thanks.

    Hello js0873,

Just to note that deleting a user profile for an account doesn't delete the account.

Are you able to manually delete the user profile(s) using option 2 below instead?

Well, I can manually delete the profile via the registry. Then I can delete the folder in users for that user, but it won't let me delete NTUSER.DAT and a few others that it says are in use. But that's more difficult than the previous way and not as clean as well. All of this was working fine in Windows, 21H1 and 21H2 until recent maintenance.

On a 21H1 machine I just backed off Windows Update KB5015807. Now I can delete users again. It's maintenance that's disabling this and it's frustrating to me.

Are you able to delete them while in Safe Mode to help prevent an in use situation?

Yes, on deleting NTUSER.DAT, I can delete it in safe mode.

In the Command Prompt that is open with administrative privileges, type net users to get a list of all the accounts. Take note of the one you wish to delete.

Type net user “UserName” /delete to remove the user account. Bear in mind that you may also lose all of its data, so you should still make a backup first.
