Updated BIOS - PIN no longer available - ?TPM issue

    Hi all

Unfortunately I can't provide a Windows version because I can't login to Windows and accessing cmd via troubleshoot doesn't give me an elevated command line to run systeminfo. All I can say is that it has the latest feature and quality updates, the last quality update installing in the last 7 days by Update.

Having scoured the internet, it looks like my problem has been caused by my TPM being cleared upon BIOS update as highlighted in this thread Updated BIOS - now can't log in to windows?? | Windows 11 Forum
I didn't want o re-open that thread after more than 30 days, and because I'm running W10 rather than 11.

The problem I face after the initial issue is that when I click on 'Setup new PIN' on Win login screen, no dialogue box appears to facilitate me setting up the PIN. I also have no alternative methods/options of logging in and doesn't allow me to input my password. To be clear, this is not a 'I don't know my password' situation; I know what my PIN was, what my password is, and have 2FA setup through email and authenticator; I just can't input any of the other login credentials and am in essence locked out of Windows.

Does anyone know a way to force Windows to allow me to login with my password rather than setting up a new PIN?

If there's no way to do this, regrettably, I think my only remaining option option is to 'Reset PC > Keep my files' which I am really reluctant to do. Not because i will lose any files because they're presevered on the reset and are also in iCloud and backup up to Backblaze; more because I can't face reinstalling 20+ pieces of software and programs again so soon after my last refresh. I am slowly resigning myself that this is now my only option, as much as I hate the thought of it.

For what it's worth, these are the options I have tried so far to (re)gain access:
Restarting into safe mode - with and without networking - to see if that gives me an option to login with password or allows me to setup new PIN. To no avail.

Uninstalling recent quality / feature updates. Only quality updates succeeded in uninstalling but did not allow me to set up pin or login with password.

Startup repair: no errors found to repair

System restore fails because of iCloud! Quelle surprise!

Activating local administrator account. I knew this wouldn't work because I did not set one up on install, simply logging straight in with my Microsoft account.

Does anyone have any further recommendations?

    TIA

    Hi, you might consider reviewing

    given
Updated BIOS - now can't log in to windows?? | Page 2 | Windows 11 Forum
    for example...

Presumably you launched System Restore offliine? It's interesting your password was accepted.

Whilst you might be able to create a new account, I would think given you've only 20 programs to reinstall, that a clean install would be quicker and better than that.

When you updated the bios did you reset cmos as most require this for the update. Have you tried disabling tpm see if that work normally an update wont remove keys

Unfortunately this solution isn't an option for me as I cannot login to Windows to run the bat file. Although the "Clicking on the Add PIN option does nothing." is the exact problem I face.

Whilst I have tried logging in both online and offline, I think I attempted system restore connected to the internet. It accepted my password which suggests Microsoft succesfully validated.

Unfortunately, I think I am resigned to this reality now given there doesn't appear to be a way to force login with my password. In my case, no PIN, no entry!

The MSI BIOS update protocol does not instruct this but I will bear it mind for future.

Yes, whilst i wasn't optimistic it would change any outcomes for me, I have tried disabling TPM; it didn't change any behaviour or options at Windows logon.

Hello, were you able to fix it? I did a bios flashback and when i got to the login page windows said pin is no longer available, then it does the same thing which is either Microsoft authenticator or my password, but even if i do both and login, when it reaches the reset pin part, it just says something went wrong, either skip or retry. and both doesn't work. last option I have is to reset pc and keep files. does anyone know how do i get around this? it wont let me reset pin or anything

Have you considered Option 2 here e.g.
Reset Password of User Account in Windows 10

Before you ask, yes I know you can't log in- so you need to click on the second piece of blue text in the tutorial as shown here:

Unfrotunately, despite hours of reading forum posts and Google results, I never found a solution that enabled me to login with my password to gain access to Windows. I had to do a fresh reinstall fo Windows 10. Before I did this, I disabled TPM in BIOS to prevent this happening again.

I couldn't because I only had one account on the PC, an administrator Microsoft account, which I could not get into Windows from because of the BIOS update and reset of PIN.

The other lesson I took away from this experience is to always activate the 'local' administrator account which is not linked to a Microsoft account. This will then always allow you to login to Windows to use this option.

Hello. So I was able to login to another admin account. I went into the advanced settings for user accounts and tried to Inherit all the files under my old user to the new one.

Copied everything Over. But I doubt that I'll ever login to that again.

However it does give me an option to remove and delete the old user that has a pin.

Since that was a Microsoft online account. I can remove it and login to a local account then try to readd it.

Not sure if it'll work. I'm still trying to change the files to full access instead of read only.

But then again these doesn't guarantee me the ownership but atleast I'll have copies of them. Because when you Remove the original account it removes all files and folders and data.

So since I have a backup. Hope it works.

I'll be back in a few hours lol
