    Can't verify identity during upgrade

My wife is out of the country and when she started her laptop today she logged in with her password, and got a message to update Windows. She selected not at this time, and then got a message to verify her account. The only option was text to her old phone number.

She no longer has that number, and that is the only option she had, so she selected “I don’t have any of these”. Since she didn’t have access to a browser she called me in the US, and I entered her information in the URL listed. I changed the phone number to a new number in the security section of her account, and received a message that she can’t get a message on the phone for 30 days. How does she get into her laptop now? Isn’t there another way she can verify her account? If not, is there a way to bypass this screen and access her laptop? She has no problem accessing her Microsoft account, just getting into her laptop. I didn't get help using MS chat support. They told me she would need to wait 30 days to access pc, after the new phone number goes into effect.
    Thanks. Richard

Hi, it's very likely your wife got this as the IP address indicates a login from an unfamiliar source, and so deemed a potential risk. Yes, frustrating. And could happen if you have a valid phone number but no phone or no roaming, say.

If you sign in to your account while traveling or if you install a new app that signs in with your account, you may get an alert.
I can't find a good answer for you... so let's see what others say.

Another temporary but very partial approach- she should be able to boot to Safe Mode, then set up a new account..
