Permission of a folder in Windows.old: Help still needed!!

Hello, I've already posted this question on the official Microsoft forum - but haven't got any valuable responses yet: This is the post.

    I wrote as follows:
I recently went from Windows 11 to Windows 10, and I have a Windows.old folder full of old files.

I'm attempting to retrieve a Minecraft Education Edition game file from this address:

    C:\Windows.old\Users\topvi\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftEducationEdition_8wekyb3d8bbwe

However, when I click on the folder I need (C:\Windows.old\Users\topvi\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftEducationEdition_8wekyb3d8bbwe \LocalState) I get an error (signed in as admin)
Permission of a folder in Windows.old.-5bd6a402-e386-4d95-83ea-f46759aa98f1.png

So once I've got this error, I click Continue and then get a new error like this:

Permission of a folder in Windows.old.-57e7287a-8921-402b-bef3-6dcc53da3746.png

Please help, I know there is a limited time on the Windows.old folder and I need this file!!!

Also, I have tried many solutions involving the security tab, external applications and registry editing. So, please don't suggest them.

Right click the file you can't access and choose: Properties ...then choose the Security tab.
At the bottom right, click on Advanced.
At the top of the window that opens, where it says: Owner ...click on Change

We need to change the ownership of the folder to "Administrators".

Click Advanced, click the Find Now button, and from "search results" select "Administrators", then click OK, OK again, then Apply, hit OK, and hit OK one last time.

Now... under "Group or User Names", choose: Administrators and put a check mark in... "Full Control"
    Then click Apply and OK.

    Hi,

If what Ghot suggested doesn't succeed, You can try to gain access to the directory with EMCO Unlock IT.

    Download - UnLock IT

    Hello MaloK + Ghot,
Thank you for your thoughtful replies. I hope you understand my rush in getting a usable answer. In attempting your answer Ghot, I received the same error. This is my configuration:

Permission of a folder in Windows.old.-b8e7c1b6-b0cd-4472-a9fc-27638549d1e4.png

And for your reply, MaloK, I installed the attached software and out of first use, it says 'Not Locked'. Here's an example:
Permission of a folder in Windows.old.-eg38454647-45845754-457457457a.png

Thank you both for your help,
    please get back asap!!!!

When seeing urgent needs for a particular file that can't be accessed by Windows I will use a Linux [Mint] LiveDVD or LiveUSB to access the drive outside of Windows, usually not an issue to copy to another place. But drive encryption may be a problem although haven't seen that yet.

ok lets get a little more brutal.

Start by verifying if the file system is clean
    Code:
    Chkdsk /f
Then From an admin cmd prompt, navigate to c:\windows.old and run the following command.
    Code:
    takeown /R /F *
    Then run
    Code:
    ICACLS * /T /Q /C /RESET
    Try to access your file.

    Thanks malok for getting back.
I receive this error when doing this:
Permission of a folder in Windows.old.-screenshot-2021-12-30-182447.png

    Here's my entire commands:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19044.1415]
    (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /f
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) n

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd c:\windows.old

    c:\Windows.old>takeown / R / F *
    ERROR: Invalid argument/option - '/'.
    Type "TAKEOWN /?" for usage.

    c:\Windows.old>takeown / R / F *
    ERROR: Invalid argument/option - '/'.
    Type "TAKEOWN /?" for usage.

    c:\Windows.old>

Berton, this will be what I'll do if all else fails.

there's no space between / and options

And you must perform the chkdsk too responding N doesn't verify the drive.

Your old Windows suffered from the multiplying "Application Data" syndrome at this point you may have file names that exceed largely the Maximum path supported by windows... That what caused the error...

But still you should gain access to the directory you want, it is not in the ones that gave an error.
