    Windows 10 21H2 update changed/added default user

After installing 21H2, windows 10 update and reboot the username and password were correct but after the profile loaded all my files/documents/pictures were gone and desktop looked like a new install. After a moment of panic, I looked on the C drive/ users and found a renamed folder with all my files. There is no "change user" from start menu. I tried logging in with microsoft account (let's go microsoft!) but it just logged in the same empty account. I tried to uninstall the 21H2 update but it only made it halfway before stopping. Is there a way to change the the login to the correct account in the registry or any other way?

    Welcome to Ten Forums

Sounds like you have been signed in with a temporary profile. See if this tutorial helps.

Whatever you try make sure you backup all your personal data before trying to fix it

Thank you both. Problem resolved! I knew there would be something I could do in the registry. After the update I was not signed in with a TEMP account, but my actual account name. Fortunately in C/USERS it listed both accounts but my original account name, which contained my data, had been changed. The registry listed both as identical except that one was a .BAK. Deleted the current user and renamed the correct user by removing .BAK and changed state to 0 and now everything is back to normal. Update is now showing feature update to 21H2 available. Will definitely NOT try installing that again.
    Thanks again!

    Cheers
I had some suspicion that it may not be the usual temp account profile, as that usually leave the users account, with the same name as it was, but because it cannot load that profile it loads a temp profile, where anything you add to it is deleted when you sign off.

The problem you had can be caused occasionally by a third party antivirus, if you have such always disable it before a version update.

It can also be caused by uisng third party system management apps, such as those that are supposed to make your system go so much faster, as many of these include registry cleaners
