    Unwanted login prompt

Generally, I have direct access to Windows after booting up. No password required.

If I log off of windows, I am asked to log back in with a password that does not exist, and I must restart the machine whereupon I am brought directly back to Windows, no password.

I don't know if this is related, but lately, after some cumulative Windows Updates, you get set of the instructions to set Windows Hello, and set up a pin number, etc., which I bypass, whereupon sometime in the future I will get a follow notification for Windows Hello setup and the pin.

Can I permanently stop the nags and login request?

    Hello,

You can use option 1 in the tutorial below to set up netplwiz to automatically sign in to your account at startup in Windows 10.

    Hi Brink,

I established setting up netplwiz to automatically sign in to my account long ago.

This is not a startup Issue. It only happens when I "Log Off" and am brought back to the lock window, the only time I am prompted for a password which, like I said, does not exist.

There will have been a password originally- and if, for example, you attempted to perform System Restore offline, you would again be required to provide one. There are other such cases where the password is still required.

Unfortunately when people opt to skip the login sequence or set up a PIN, they sometimes think the password can be discarded. Not so.

    Hi,

I think you have a PW set and you're just not aware of it.

Open an administrative Command Prompt and:

Verify if you have a PW set. When it was set. And if required.

    Code:
    Net User YourUserName
    Output example:

    Code:
    User name Administrator
    Full Name
Comment Built-in account for administering the computer/domain
    User's comment
    Country code 000 (System Default)
    Account active No
    Account expires Never

Password last set 11/20/2010 10:57:24 PM
    Password expires Never
    Password changeable 11/21/2010 10:57:24 PM
    Password required Yes
    User may change password Yes

    Workstations allowed All
    Logon script
    User profile
    Home directory
    Last logon 11/20/2010 10:47:20 PM

    Logon hours allowed All

    Local Group Memberships *Administrators
    Global Group memberships *None
    The command completed successfully.

If you dont remember the PW used, try to change your current password from there.

    Code:
    Net User YourUserName new-password
Using netplwiz to logon automatically does not remove password required to open a session. You have to re-run it to reset your new login information. and have to enter your password after a logoff. This is all normal behaviour.

ok, but when you say "the password is still required", are you saying that there are occasions when you will be still be just simply "prompted" for a password, which can be avoided by rebooting, , or you actually have to produce a password?

Since I have no idea what the original password might have been, does that mean I now have to create a new password in netplwiz, then once again disable password prompts at startup?

I don't get the lock window after restarting. Are we saying that there is no way to avoid the nuisance of the lock window after logging off?

    Just what I do.

I set up a flash drive with a file for passwords. I input each and every password in that spreadsheet. Kept off the PC so that no one can access my passwords except me when I must put the flash drive physically on the PC. NOW: The other thing I did was set up my sign on for the PIN. That is easier to remember. The other thing that I had to do, was set my passwords the same for me and as an administrator. And for the laptop. So, I have one password for all 4 of those situations. But as y'all have stated, when you forget your password, there is sometimes no recourse. The real problem is when you can't even get on the PC because you don't have the password. The only thing I can suggest is write it down on a 3M sticky and keep it in your wallet. FYI on that flash drive, I have over 300 different URL's with at least 25 different passwords. What a pain passwords are! A "necessary evil"!

    Hi Bree,

    Bree said:
Thanks, that's very good to know. I disabled all sign-in options long ago, as well as hibernation & sleep because of the associated complications. All I have now is the screensaver. I don't care for hibernation, but would welcome back the "sleep" function with no negative consequences.

But I'm a little confused about the info in brinks tutorial. If I alter the Local Group Policy Editor settings, will this invoke a time period after which a logon password will be required? Is this also the solution for logoff/logon? There is no mention of that in Brinks tutorial.

I don't necessarily disagree. For me, that's what highly encrypted data partitions are for. If I'm locked out of the machine, and there is a password issue, good luck
