This doesn't make any difference, and does the opposite of what I want to do. If I do the steps to disable it it still happens- it's already like this and that's the problem.
What do you mean the opposite? Step 5 will make your account as the default selected account for login. But you need to do everything in right order or the changes don't work

    Hello dancedar, :)

To disable automatic sign in at startup, make sure that all accounts have a password added, and that you check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below.

So there's no way to do this without adding a password? This is such an odd thing to have enabled!

The problem is that at startup, the last user will be automatically selected on the sign-in screen. If that last user doesn't have a password, it behaves as if you clicked on that user, and automatically signs in to the account.

Having a password is the only way to stop that.

You don't have to log in automatically. The link provides you with instruction so that your user account becomes the primary default login option (ie not your mother anymore). You then use the same tutorial to make sure that when you have done the switch, Windows will ask for your password at login. If you don't want a password you could use an easy to remember PIN number instead

    Result:
    • The pc won't automatically login to your mothers account without password
    • The pc will automatically show your username first at login and will request a valid password to access windows.

That is what you want isn't it? Or did I get this wrong? (I'm easily confused lol)

I had this issue too a while ago. Found that changing the Lock screen from Spotlight to Image/Picture (using Dutch version) fixed this for me. I think it is a bug but this change works for me.

OK I have this problem too and I've tried the above to no avail.

I have 3 standard accounts with no password the administrator account with a password. If I follow the registry changes detailed above the admin account always logs in rather than sitting there waiting for the password to be entered which would be more useful as I could at least then pick a different user. If I remove the password from the registry then it doesn't login but complains that the password is incorrect. It also displays the Administrator user twice in the list of users at the bottom right of the screen.
I can at this point select a different user but its a bit of cr*p solution.

There must be a more elegant solution to this issue - this aspect was much more straightforward under windows 7.

(I did an inplace upgrade form Win 7 x64 BTW).

I don't see how this helps me. I do not want any account - administrator or any of the three standard accounts - to login automatically. The guide you have linked to is how to set accounts to login automatically the exact opposite of what I want.
