Getting into a muddle with MS password on 3 devices

After a recent problem with the MS Windows sign in password had gone away, things (including me) are now getting into a major muddle. It started with a request for me to update my MS Outlook password on my Android phone. It was rejected as being wrong. I decided it would be easier to put it right in my TabletPC, by changing the password there. This kept getting rejected because my existing password was not accepted. I tried several versions of the password to no avail (and probably a wrong move as I have got muddled over which versions I have tried ----I have human memory problems as well as digital ones, despite writing things down.) The phone continues to say the passwords are wrong. So I hoped to start afres on my Android Tablet but the muddle got worse.

I log in automatically on my main PC so somewhere the system has my correct password ---yes? One thing which I think might help is if there was a simple way to check the passwords I try on the PC, without having to keep trying to change the password, the only procedure I have found, Rather cumbersome and it riskes corrupting the now unknown but correct password. I used to be able to display a list of most (app etc) passwords in use via Edge, but that page has become blank.

I hope this explanation is not too confusing.

I use the same Microsoft Account password on 4 devices, 3 Desktops and 1 Notebook. I have also assigned a PIN on 3 of them and a slightly different PIN on the other. I do not Sync the computers.

By accident I entered my original password and despite it having been rejected before, this time it was accepted, and it has worked on my phone and tablet. There have been some strange glitches such as security codes just received from MS being declated as 'wrong' (despite using Copy & Paste) --- but anyway, I can now concentrate on a few other issues.

No, Windows does not let anything else see user account passwords.

    • I wrote too soon, my password is being rejected in both my PC and phone again

    Responses from MS include:

    • "You can use any phone number to request the security code." Followed by " We cannot send a text message to this number."
"To unlock your account, sign in to get a security code." I cannot sign inI!

If you see error message when requesting a security code, this could mean the phone number has been used too many times in a short period of time, or that we've detected something suspicious about the phone number. Today this came after my first attempt

The only "something suspicious" I can think of is the Catch 22 response from MS

Next day. I am now stuck with asking for a CODE to be sent to my phone, which does not reveive it (phone is working OK). Trying again (after only one attempt) results in being told I have tried too many times and to try again tomorrow

"This alias cannot be added to your account. Choose a different alias".

What should I do about this? What 'different alias"? I have have made a little progress amid a lot of errors, such as above. I have discovered Windows is using the wrong phone number, my landline, which does not handle text, instead of my smart phone. The a above is a response to my attempt to gain access to change the number. I have gained access to my activity, which lists signin failures and successes, but is not what I need. Can someone suggest how I might be able to get the phone number changed? I should have been able to get help via MS Community, but I need the password to get in.

I have had a popup suggesting to download the phone app to help signin but in order to do this I need to enter a password which is accepted. Before all this kicked off I added a second email address to my account, hoping it would help if this situation occured --- it has not, so far, so I am wondering if it has added to the confusion instead.

Fortunately my PIN is still accepted for signin to my PC but not much more --- when my password is rejected the PIN has not been one of the alternatives offered.

Do you already have a spare [fallback], local, password-protected Admin account on your computer so you can get into it even if these problems get worse?

I cannot advise you about the problems you are having because I do not use an MSAccount login.

    Best of luck,

Thanks. I do have a second account, not used often. I had given it some thought but will it just want to connect to my MS account with the same (rejected) details, password etc?

No, a local user account has nothing at all do with with any other user account of any kind.

Thanks for the response and I apologise for the large number of keyboard errors, a result of trying to find a cure late into the night. I am anxious to find the cure, as I fear the possible consequences of being locked out of my MS account for a long time (although thankfully not locked out of my computer). I have made some progress, in particular I managed to get on to the MS Tech Support chat service. We spent a lot of time going through a number of possibilities, so far without success, but I can rejoin the chat later today and continue where we left off. I understand the reasons for 'you have tried too many times, try again tomorrow' but it adds to the frustration.

    I assume you
have tested the local account by logging into it &
have checked that it is an Admin account [Settings, Accounts will tell you that].
