Unknown original administrator name and password

Sorry you all, please bear with me. My husband and I are elderly and not very computer literate. We bought me a new desktop computer and I’m doing fine for what I do, but I keep running into a problem. Sometimes, when I try to do something, I get a box saying “To continue, enter an administrator name and password”, but the Yes box is greyed out.
We have no idea what the original admin name and password is, and can’t remember ever setting one up. (Like I said, very old here, lol). It is a new computer – not one we purchased used.
If you know how to help me, please give me step by step instructions (Granny’s cookies will arrive shortly). Thanks, Linda

Well the built in administrator username is "Administrator" without the quotes and the a is a big A.

The password, well, that would have been setup by whoever setup windows on that computer. If when you got it and first turned it on, it just came up to the desktop, someone else setup the computer for you and would have to ask them.

If you set it up and it would have you set that password, then you would have made this user account during setup.

Sorry i cant be more helpful.

Yes, my 80 year old husband set it up for me and has used several passwords over the years. But the computer doesn't come up with Administrator, it comes up as Bob. We can log in as Bob or Linda, but we can't change some of the areas that require Administrator authorization.

Thats normal, the built in admin account is hidden in a sense. It should have a box, just erase the name Bob or Linda and put in Administrator. Have to inquire what the husband set the password as. It wont blow up trying passwords :)

he did good not making the normal accounts administrators. he did very good. it protects you from some of the nasties on the internet

If it`s your own personal desktop, you should get rid of the windows password, they are useless.

Make sure your account is a Admin account, and you won`t get those pop ups.

    Go into Settings>Accounts>Your info

Does it show you as a Administrator ?

Did he also set up the security questions to be used if password is forgotten:

Brian -- No, neither account shows either as an Admin. Bob says local user, and mine doesn't say anything.

Dave, Bob is listed as a local user. Yes, he set up a security question. We can change his password and have answered his security question. We can sign is as both Bob and Linda, but neither of us is listed as an Admin. Therefore, we can't access some of the "locked" areas.

    Linda,

You can get back the ability to do 'admin' things but it requires some careful work.
    - The tutorials [the links below] will take you through each step
    - If you have any questions then don't hesitate to post them.

Step 1 - Enable the built-in admin account
    Enable ... Built-In Administrator account - TenForumsTutorials
    - You will have to use Option 5 and it will look daunting
    - You will need to use a Windows 10 installation USB/disk or 'Recovery drive'. In your situation, you cannot use the 'boot to Advanced Startup' that is also discussed there.
    - - If you do not have one then you will have to ask somebody else if you can borrow one [it will not matter how new or old their Windows 10 is].
    - - You will not, in your current situation, be able to make one from a download because that requires Admin permission and you don't have that at the moment.

Step 2 - Create one [or two] additional local admin accounts
Add Local Account ... - TenForumsTutorials
Change to Admin account type - TenForumsTutorials
Write down the passwords somewhere secure yet accessible.
    - I always create two additional admin accounts so I know one will always work even if the other becomes corrupt.

Step 3 - Log into one of the new admin accounts
    - This is just to test it & to use it for Step 4

Step 4 - Disable the built-in admin account [same tutorial as Step 1]
    ... Disable Built-In Administrator account - TenForumsTutorials
    - You can now use any of the Options to do this. Option 1 is probably simplest because you can just copy what you need from the tutorial.
    - You can now log out of the admin account and back into Bob or Linda.

From now on, whenever you need to carry out a function that requires admin status, you can enter the name & password of either of the new accounts you have just made.

    All the best,
    Denis

@Granny1943 could you take it back to where you bought it and have them make the changes for you?

The account you were asked to set up when you first turned on the computer would have been made an administrator. The greyed out box indicates that at some time after the initial setup this account was changed from being an administrator to a standard user, meaning you no longer have any administrator account available.

Try3 has helped many others recover from this. Follow his instructions carefully and you should get back to full control of your computer.
