Unknown original administrator name and password

Sorry you all, please bear with me. My husband and I are elderly and not very computer literate. We bought me a new desktop computer and I’m doing fine for what I do, but I keep running into a problem. Sometimes, when I try to do something, I get a box saying “To continue, enter an administrator name and password”, but the Yes box is greyed out.
We have no idea what the original admin name and password is, and can’t remember ever setting one up. (Like I said, very old here, lol). It is a new computer – not one we purchased used.
If you know how to help me, please give me step by step instructions (Granny’s cookies will arrive shortly). Thanks, Linda

Well the built in administrator username is "Administrator" without the quotes and the a is a big A.

The password, well, that would have been setup by whoever setup windows on that computer. If when you got it and first turned it on, it just came up to the desktop, someone else setup the computer for you and would have to ask them.

If you set it up and it would have you set that password, then you would have made this user account during setup.

Yes, my 80 year old husband set it up for me and has used several passwords over the years. But the computer doesn't come up with Administrator, it comes up as Bob. We can log in as Bob or Linda, but we can't change some of the areas that require Administrator authorization.

Thats normal, the built in admin account is hidden in a sense. It should have a box, just erase the name Bob or Linda and put in Administrator. Have to inquire what the husband set the password as. It wont blow up trying passwords :)

he did good not making the normal accounts administrators. he did very good. it protects you from some of the nasties on the internet

Did he also set up the security questions to be used if password is forgotten:

Brian -- No, neither account shows either as an Admin. Bob says local user, and mine doesn't say anything.

Dave, Bob is listed as a local user. Yes, he set up a security question. We can change his password and have answered his security question. We can sign is as both Bob and Linda, but neither of us is listed as an Admin. Therefore, we can't access some of the "locked" areas.
