Thanks. That was a relief.
I am back here because I have just discovered that the system image I created has been done on a FAT 32 file system.
Does that mean it is useless ?

If it had been made on a Fatt32-formatted drive then it must have been smaller than 4GB or you would have had an error message a the time you made it.
I believe that you made the system image on the same drive as you put all your backups on. So that's Fat32-formatted? So the drive is smaller than 32GB?

No I didn`t in the end. I thought it wiser to steer clear of anything else I had backed up so I used a 16 GB Kingston Flash Drive - it would have re-formatted anyway wouldn`t it ? I didn`t even consider whether it was FAT 32 or NTFS.
I am confused about the 64 bit \32bit thing. Have I been using the wrong registry section for a 64bit Windows 10 OS ?
When I access it and type in the commands etc. the user line shows FUNF 32bit. I don`t understand how my OS can be 64 bit one minute and 32 bit the next. I have been assuming the 32bit is the system and 64 bit the rest. Am I right ?
I am also trying to find a completely clear drive either external HDRIVE or USB Flash Drive to create a Macrium bootable Recovery Image. I have the one I made for the Desktop but my heart fails me at the prospect of ever trying to go back there so I might as well reformat and use that. What do you think ?
Making Macrium bootable images is an advanced topic. I suggest you just get images done for now and worry about the rest later. But if you want to use it and have problems then ask in the relevant tutorial [which I gave you a link to].
Or do you mean the Macrium boot USB? That's a different thing. I gave you a different link to instructions for it.
Macrium Reflect [free edition] is often recommended in this forum for making system images. Other utilities are available but this one is so commonplace that you can get plenty of help for it.
- I understand that many TenForums members use the free version and find it perfectly satisfactory.

Sorry for delayed reply. I have been making up my mind which backups I can do without. I still have far too many old backup files hanging about and need to bite the bullet and get rid of most of them.
In the first instance I decided to re format the 1 terabyte Macrium backup of the old desktop . The system is working better now than it has for a long time so I will be better off creating an up to date Macrium system inage using free Reflect wbich I have downloaded.. Am waiting for that to finish then I will set Macrium going.
I dont think it will be worth keeping the complete copies of other backups I made recently. I am clearing another 32 GB drive and plan to use it to store backups of currently updated data . I can continue trawling tbrough backups deleting duplicates when the Macrium system image is complete.
I found folders had gone missing from the TOSHIBA Hard Drive I was backing up to before I started this thread. So I used a diskpart command to list the contents of it and was alarmed to discover it is storing pages and pages of files not showing up in the directory. I exited without doing anything about it but once I have copied any I really want from the more obvious contents appearing in the directory when I open it in File Explorer, I will clear that too. I know I could try Disc cleanup but it wld be simpler to wipe it.
Finally (for today ! I am rather habging upon the order of my going !) I fear it was more by good luck than good management on my part that Repair install went so well. I had not taken on board that I had actually mounted an ISO to do it and dont think I have ever unmounted it. Should I do it now ?
Many more thanks. mjc now alas x1
.
I hope this is all a misunderstanding.
Might the unlisted files be hidden files? Since the subfolder AppData is, by default, hidden then it, its subfolders and the files in them would not normally be shown. You could tick the checkbox in File explorer, View menu, Hidden items to show hidden files.
- You can also tell File explorer to display 'system' files.
- If any mystery remains, please would you give me some examples of paths-files you listed in Diskpart that are not showing up elsewhere.
I didn't think about that either. Yes, you can do that now.
- In File explorer, right-click on the thing labelled DVD Drive (DriveLetter:) LabelProbablyEndingWith-ISO
- Select Eject
- It normally takes several seconds to respond by removing the entry.

Re confusion over 64 bit/32 bit. When I access the registry from my Current Admin User Account, ie/ type Start + R and type regedit into the box, registry shows C:\Funf 32bit but the Windows build is 64 bit. So I wonder if I am correct to say I have 64 bit Windows.
Re: Toshiba external hard drive, I am having trouble finding the precise directions I followed yesterday.
It was simple enough to change to the Toshiba Drive (W drive) . Response is W: on a fresh line. Typing in diskpart brings up fresh line DISKPART - I type in list disk and it lists the 2 disks (I assume one is C Drive - Disk 0 ; the other hasstorage of over 900 GB so that is the Toshiba one. Only 100 MB free. I then typed a command beginning attributes but I can`t find it on Google and I cannot remember the rest of it. Sorry.
It looks from a directive I found this afternoon as though attributes only has to do with setting read or write protect flags which I certainly did not do. I somehow found an enormous list of files some going back to 1998 - a lot of them Money Manager files. But I cannot reproduce this today. Perhaps I was still on the C Drive, not on the W Drive.
TOSHIBA Drive Properties says it is fine, no errors and is using 655 GB of space leaving 276 free. I will probably reformat it anyway once Macrium Reflect has backed up my data. But I need to spend a bit of time collecting up what I do want in one place so I can backup without duplicating unnecessarily and often unintentionally.
Moneysoft is causing problems again but I started another thread for it.
