I pressed esc button when booting up and tried the fault finding program but no luck. I tried escape again and powered up and looked at the bios, adjusted the boot up sequence to boot from a usb memory stick. Tried booting up with a windows 10 install usb version but it keeps asking for drivers that I do not have. maybe that is corrupted. is there some other program I can use, something I can download from the internet There is no dvd drive on this hp pavilion laptop.

I also tried microsofts reset your password on a different PC but as I have 4 pc's and the passwords are different that will not work or will it ? maybe I can reset them all to the same password. I think there is a program on the internet full of pc tools that enable you to log on but I can't remember its name. Will try changing the password as per microsofts instructions and maybe it will change them all

That implies you have a MS account, and perhaps you were using that to login to the PC before it went pear-shaped? You have not answered Denis' question re the type of account you have/had. Start with that: were you using a MS account or a local one?

Hi Guru, sorry but I don't know what kind of user account I was using at the time, I think it may have been a local account but I am not sure. I normally use my fingerprint to log on but that does not work either. When I try to reset the password it says I need a password reset disk and I will try and create one today, thanks everyone for your help.

Hi Guru, it says I have to make a password reset disk using my local account but I do not know if I have a local account on this desktop pc. At 86 years old I get easily confused so I will just have to re-install windows 10 on my new laptop. I have tried twice to create a suitable usb install disk but when I try to install windows 10 I keep getting the message that I need some kind of drivers and they cannot find them on my laptop or on my usb memory stick.. Maybe Amazon will have a suitable usb windows in 10 install program. I have given up on getting help from Microsoft

You can't. It is something that needs to be made in advance when you know the password and can log into the account. They are only for local user accounts. They are an expensive alternative to writing the password down on a piece of paper.

Dear Everyone, I have given up trying to fix this problem and have ordered a usb copy of windows 11 installation from a vendor on eBay, he assures me that I can activate the Windows 11 program using my current Windows 10 Pro numbers and keys. Thanks everyone for your help, Dan

Agreed 100%. Although I wouldn't use the word sucker, just very, very, uninformed.

Well Microsoft were unable to help and I tried very hard and as a sadly uniformed pensioner, I had tried everything I knew including spending hours downloading free software that didn't work. The guy on eBay is not going to become an overnight millionaire charging 15 pounds including a 15 Gb usb memory stick. I think its a small price to pay if you count the dozens of hours I have spent on this. I had bought this laptop because Micr$soft had said my old laptop would not be suitable for use on windows 11 and so I get windows 11 a bit earlier, they will supply all the upgrades I need.

And if the software does not work I can claim the 15 pounds back from ebay

    Dan,

Windows 11 has not been released yet. Those using it are on versions that are intened to be replaced several times during the development phase. See www.elevenforum.com/whats-new/posts

You'd be better off responding to post #15
