My sign-in email is inextricably linked to the wrong account.

    Windows 10 Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1110)

    Hello.

When I bought this new PC (may years ago now), I set it up with the official windows account as an .aol account, because that's what I had. In the meantime, I've gotten an Outlook account and want to make that my primary account, but my original .aol account is already linked to the Outlook account! I press the .aol and get the Outlook. When I originally sign in to Windows, I enter the .aol account's password.

So here in more detail. When I go into Windows Settings, Your Info, it shows my account image, my name in bold, my email (with the .aol account), Administrator -- > Billing info etc. etc. --> Manage my Microsoft Account

I have an Outlook account, and want it to be the Your info base account. When I go and press "Manage my Microsoft Account" with the .aol account, it takes me to my Outlook account! It's very confusing.

I read the How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums link, but something is going wrong...

Thank you very much, I sure hope that I've explained it properly.

    Go here
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...3-c9ba8ba0e00b
click on the link under this item
Sign in to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft with your Microsoft account. If you’re having issues signing in to your Microsoft account, go to Microsoft account help.

    Then enter the AOL details
they will send a verification email to your nominated security check - email address or whatever you set up as a security check
When you have passed that proceed and choose as shown on the microsoft link
If you want to use an existing email address or phone number, go to step 6.
Under Sign-in preferences, select Change sign-in preferences.

setting it as your Outlook account

    Thanks for the assistance.

Unfortunately, I have all ready tried those routines. When I enter the "Manage how you sign in to Microsoft" it wants my Outlook account password.

I have tried adding an email with the .aol account, to try and delete it, but I'm only told that that email address is all ready taken.

My sign-in email is inextricably linked to the wrong account.-microsoft-sing-.jpg

Unfortunately, when I press the manage my account link on the Windows Settings Your Info page, it continues to have the .aol account as the primary account(as in the first screen capture), and asks for its password upon sign-in. But when I press the manage link, it takes me to the [I]correct[I] Outlook screen, but the computer itself holds onto the .aol account as the sign-in account and for other Windows things as well. For instance, when I reloaded Edge, it automatically thought that the .aol account was the main account. Which it's not.

I'm sorry that this is very confusing to understand, I hope that I'm expressing it as clearly as I can. I just want to get rid of the .aol account and put in my Outlook account.

    Thank you very much.

Thanks again. I went to: Change the email address or phone number for your Microsoft account/Manage how you sign in to Microsoft

This didn't work. The screen capture above is when I entered the Outlook information accidentally . When I enter the AOL information like you said to (I missed that the first time), I still get:
My sign-in email is inextricably linked to the wrong account.-your-info-windows-try-1.jpg

There's no Outlook option shown or given, and when I try to add another email (the Outlook email) it just tells me that that email is all ready taken, and doesn't do anything. The Sign-in Preferences doesn't help, it doesn't list the Outlook account as actually being there. It just shows the AOL address, and then the name of the AOL address without the @ information.

I must be missing something. Sorry!

Is this possibly because I do have the Outlook account on my computer and there is no way to move aliases from one Microsoft account to another?

This may (probably will) not help: When you say you have the Outlook account on my computer, do you mean you can log into Windows using the Outlook acct? If so, what info does that show? You should be able to use that acct and dispense with (remove from the PC) the AOL acct. If you don't have the Outlook acct as a login option, try adding (in Windows) a new acct: Setting>Family>Add someone else. Use the Outlook credentials to create the acct, then try to lo in to Windows with it. I won't go any further, as I may be barking up a gumtree.

    Hi, thanks for helping out.

What I mean is that I have a Microsoft Account (Outlook) account, so I can access all of the Microsoft features online.

I also mean that I can log on to my computer using the Microsoft Account (Outlook) credentials, but under Your Info, it still shows the AOL account as the primary administrator. I've tried adding the MS Account and then swapping and deleting, but I can't even get that far. When I'm logged in as either the MS or AOL accounts, I can't add them because it stays the other email is already in use.

Thanks for helping, I hope this cleared it up a little.

Is the AOL account also used for a Microsoft account
When you create a Microsoft account, you can use any email address as the user name, including addresses from Outlook.com, Yahoo! or Gmail.

Yes, when I bought this laptop many years back, I only had my AOL account, so I made a Microsoft Account out of the AOL email address.

What you're experiencing is that the aol is your Windows device alias, which is separate from your Outlook acct which is for MS services but can also serve as your device id. If you bought a 2nd PC, at setup, you could add your Outlook email as the alias and the new PC would be added to your list of devices (see top tab in your post 5 screenshot). I have 6 devices listed which are mine and ones that I support for others. But if you tried to use the aol address, you'd go thru all the steps, all over, that you did with the first PC.

In the screenshot in post 5, is the 2nd blacked out box simply your name w/no email? Also, when you click 'Add email' under that, do you get this screen? and can you add your existing outlook address? (see post end)-

if you can, then go back and click 'remove' next to aol primary alias and you should be set. If not, take a hammer to this- go to Settings/Accounts/Your info/Manage my MS account which will open a web page like this-
My sign-in email is inextricably linked to the wrong account.-screenshot_2.jpg
is the @ under your picture in upper-L aol or outlook? Then go to Device list, click your computer, on next page under 'Manage' click remove computer. That should kill the aol alias once and for all. You should now be able to sign in with outlook address as primary alias for your PC, as the 2nd name w/o email indicates you set up a Local account at some point.
