I have a corrupt profile after a windows update. Can I repair advice?

First of all, I would like to see if people can check out this thread:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-c18acc9328ae

There is quite a long discussion there. I am trying to get help. I want to back up a lot of data, then try to repair my profile. I was told to go to the command prompt using a bootable media. However, it seems to give me only two options: 1) a dvd, or 2) a USB drive. I do not think that I can do that. I do not have any DVDs available, and I only have external hard drives. I would like to see if those are an option from command prompt. I do not see why not if notepad allows me to explore windows. But I would like to make sure. I am not wanting to boot from those, but I want to copy to them. It has not been made clear to me if it will actually override the read-only error that has occurred due to updating windows. Also, I am aware that I have updates waiting due to being in a metered connection. I also am waiting to restore itunes backups, and due to the corrupt profile, all of the songs have been moved.

Well, just to get you started... you can use Macrium Reflect to backup your entire Windows install to one of your external drives.
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium will allow you to make... Macrium bootable media (CD or USB stick), so you can access your backups and command prompt, even if Windows won't boot.

In other words...with a Macrium backup and it's bootable media, you can do anything you want to Windows, and still restore from the backup you made.

I would rather not use trial software. The other guy said I can make a bootable media on my sandisk. From that link, it says that Macrium expires if it is not purchased. I would like to find out if there is another way, and if that command prompt thing can use an external hard drive. Supposedly, I can make a Windows installation bootable media (likely with my registration code) on my sandisk usb drive. There are conflicting stories about that, such as it must be partitioned, and it doesn't have to be, and it will work, and may not work....

It's NOT trial software. ONLY the commercial editions are trial software.

At that link, click on Home Use, enter an email, and you'll be set.
I'd say 80-85% of the people on this forum (myself included) use Macrium Reflect.

There are even tutorials for Macrium Reflect... Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Actually, you don't even need to give an email if you pick 'Home use' (you can, but it's optional).

And even if you got the Trial version instead, it doesn't expire. At the end of the 30-day trial it continues to work as the Free version.

I'm one of those '80-85%' who used the Free version for two or three years before deciding to buy for the few extra Premium features. Free is exactly the same software as the paid for version. When I bought mine I just entered the new product key into my installed Reflect Free to unlock the Premium features.

I just don't want to install a trial software on my usb drive, and have it expire, and then be unable to use it. I don't really understand from these posts also if it is a bootable media for windows or back-ups. I want to back up what is currently read-only, and also make my bootable media for windows on a usb. I can only back up the files on my external hard drive, and I can only make bootable media on the usb.

For the 2nd time. It's NOT trial software.

Here's the link to the user guide...

Here is a screen shot of Macrium Reflect installed in Windows 10, and another screenshot of the Macrium Reflect bootable rescue media.

I am not sure if you understand me. The bootable media that I have mentioned is to do a repair installation of my Windows 10 profile, not backup my files. That is a separate installation. I do want to backup files, but not install software on two separate laptops. I do not want to install backup software on bootable media. Why are the instructions nearly 550 pages long for backing up software?

I do understand that the first person to reply did say that i can back up the entire installation of Windows, but I don't really want to do that. I want to back up certain software, and repair my profile. I am not getting enough help from the Microsoft Community Forums for some reason. Was anyone able to check out that link?

    Joshua,

A Repair install will not affect a corrupted user account profile at all. It is not a relevant procedure for such a problem.

In order to advise you properly:-
I am not at all clear whether you have access to your computer [from what you've written].
1 What exactly happens when you start your computer?
2 If you are logged in and are therefore running Windows, what user account are you using? Your normal one or another one? Is the account you are using an Admin account?
3 What symptoms make you think your user profile is corrupt?

Yes, I have read that other thread.

Well, it is mentioned in that thread (from my knowledge). I am using a temp account (which has the name of the original account). The original account is moved to C:/users. I have two new alternate administrator accounts (which I am not sure are of any use yet). All I am certain of that happens when I start the computer, is that once Windows loads, it gives me the option to login to different accounts. The current account was originally an administrator account. However, it changed to a user account, then keeps logging into a Microsoft account that is supposedly an administrator account, and keeps asking me to re-verify it (likely because it is corrupted). Prior to the updates, it did not connect it to a Microsoft account. The thread does mention why it is corrupt (at least the links in the beginning of the thread do). I know that I have mentioned that since the update, the files have all become read-only. I also mentioned that MS Office 2007 has become hidden and the shortcuts were put in ProgramData, while on other computers with MS Office 2000, it is not hidden. On this thread, I did mention that there are songs that are moved that were previously in a certain place backed up with itunes (or something like that). Basically, everything from the main profile has been moved, everything from the desktop, downloads, documents, most things from the start menu was moved. Even zoom seems to be a different version. Software in Program files does not even all seem to function (MS Office 2007 is just one program, and that was there initially when I updated. when i uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, it was hidden, but can be searched for in the start menu, and will run from a shortcut, but the file location will not open). The fact that every file has changed to read-only shows something is wrong. There was some file that was in some system properties that I tried to open from pc info or something like that, that now requires an app to open (I think it might be windows defender) , and several things keep getting a prompt that has "okay" grayed out, and I cannot close it. I also was not able to open command prompt with administrative privileges anymore. I cannot override the read-only files either. From my research, this has happened a lot with the update, and some computer's hard drives have crashed. this is not abnormal. i have set my system to a metered connection to not download the third update since january. I think it is a false claim that it does not update frequently, but I know that it did not update frequently in the past, and I know that when I had vista, it was not forced to update. it was optional. However, I recall, that there were many. There were those for office, and multiple for windows, maybe some for net framework, and other things.
