    Where Can I Locate Information Concerning Default File Ownership ?


    Hi,
    I'm currently running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit edition, Version 21H1, O.S. Build 19043.899, W/Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3030.0 installed. My question is concerning 'default' ownership of files in windows 10, I'm trying to locate a site that would let me view that information. One file that I have a question about is this one: ‪C:\Documents and Settings\davyp\Local Settings ? The 'davyp' is my administrator username, the reason that I'm seeking information concerning this is while using the following: Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10 | Tutorials (tenforums.com) & I also have this enable in my context menu: Add Change Owner to Context Menu in Windows 10 | Tutorials (tenforums.com) . In regards to the file that I have included in bold letters in this post, using the take ownership I changed the owner of that file to myself, I don't know if that was okay or not ?

    Open CMD Prompt and change the directory to C:\Documents and Settings\davyp\Local Settings. Type this command into the CMD Prompt and press <Enter> . . .

    I tried following these instructions: "See if this helps.

    Am I supposed to be using the command prompt in the administrator mode or just the regular mode ?
    I tried using the command prompt in the administrator mode & received this:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>C:\Documents and Settings\davyp\Local Settings'C:\Documents' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

    And in the regular mode:

    C:\Users\davyp>C:\Documents and Settings\davyp\Local Settings'C:\Documents' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

    I'm thinking that I seem to be having some serious old age moments this morning, thanks so much for trying to help me !!

    I think your dir command only shows current properties and not what should be the default.

    There is a file included in previous versions of Windows (and even Win 10) that was used to restore default permissions, however since Windows 7 and 8 this is no longer reliable method, using it would lead to corruption and there is no alternative. (at least not supported by MS)

    There was also a link to MS site about that file but you can only find it in search engine caches.

    You have to change dir to that folder. Type "cd" in front of that path:

    cd "C:\Documents and Settings\davyp\Local Settings"

    also another possibility is to repair system with Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free/Pro , but be careful.

    File permissions and ownership changing to default can be tricky, and is not so well documented after Windows 7 era. So, System partition backup is highly recommended!

    I kept thinking that I was missing something in the command prompt window, turns out it was just a simple 'cd'. After doing so here are my results:

    Volume in drive C is System

    I'm thinking that I might need to change the ownership back to the 'default' owner, but since I didn't check before I took ownership, now I don't actually know who to change the ownership to. Now you can hopefully see why I posted my original question.

    Now you can hopefully see why I posted my original question.

    Have a look at this to see if it will help => How to Add Reset Permissions to Context Menu in Windows

    I would Strongly Suggest that you create a System Image FIRST if you are not familiar with Permissions etc.

    Hi,
    I'm currently using this method to reset permissions: Add Reset Permissions to Context Menu in Windows | Tutorials (tenforums.com), the good thing about all of this is the fact that the computer in question is not my main computer. I've actually been thinking about formatting the hard drive & starting over from scratch. I really don't like doing so, but if I need to I will. While I'm typing this reply, the permissions are being reset back to their defaults in the folder I mentioned. I'm actually resetting this entire folder: C:\Documents and Settings
