I may need a tin foil hat, but I believe the government of every technologically advanced country is spying on its citizens way more than we think. And maybe even on the citizens of other countries as well. And people think MS is spying....not nearly as much as the .gov is.
If we start to question whether these things are really as bad or just little, then Edward Snowden failed to deliver his message to the world.
I don't think there will be 2nd Snowden anytime soon so it's all about us, following link may help to revisit our defenses:
Opt out of global data surveillance programs like PRISM, XKeyscore, and Tempora - PRISM Break - PRISM Break
Being disconnected from the Internet is about all one can do to prevent knowledge being disseminated about us. I recall back in the mid-'90s, when the Internet was becoming more popular than Bulletin Boards for exchanging software, telling clients when asking that anything that could be found in stores and on the streets could be found on the Internet then saying that is a two-way street, others could find out about us. Everything we do requires giving out information, only way to totally prevent improper use of that would be finding a cave to live in, really off the grid.
@Berton
You're absolutely correct but I would caution against such mindset ex:
- you can never hide your self 100% sooner or later you're going to fail or
- governments or companies will always find a way to track you.
While it is true we can't hide our self completely that doesn't mean we should give up and just get over it, doing so we only make a favor to big brother.
Most skilled users surely know how to hide their activity if they really need to, real problem is that new members of online community must not give up because giving up has basically become practice or because most people say so.
I think in this case majority is not correct, instead, majority just gave up because it's not practical, easy or fun.
It's not a hidden knowledge, the five big and excessive spying nations are
USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand
