Password for local account tied to hotmail logon account?

    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit 20H2 19042.844

    Hello!

Here's the context: Whenever I setup Windows 10 for the first time, I use my hotmail/Microsoft account to set everything up and to logon to Windows. Windows then creates a local profile/account that is tied to my hotmail account.

Example: if my hotmail account is bubba@hotmail.com, then Windows creates a local profile named bubba and uses that name as my users folder (c:\users\bubba\).

Sometimes I need to start a service or create a task in task scheduler, and Windows asks for the password for "bubba". I have no idea what that is. It's not the hotmail password or the PIN - I've tried that - and the bubba account isn't listed in the user applet in Settings so I can't access it.

I'm thinking there's either something very obvious I'm missing or I'm doing something wrong.

How can I get the password to the local account? Anyone know?

    Thanks.

Windows uses the short name bubba for your MSAccount-linked user account. It is still your MSAccount [Hotmail in your case]. You are not dealing with a separate user account. If you enter the command
    Code:
    net user bubba
you'll see in its detailed results the Full name entry and that will be the full name you originally used when setting up your Hotmail account.

If your Hotmail account's password is not being accepted then that is a procedural limitation with Task scheduler or there is an unusual fault on your computer.
    - Since bubba is the only account, it must be an Admin account.
    - You can test that from
    right-click on Start button,
    Windows PowerShell (Admin).
The dialog that appears just makes you click on a Yes button and does not make you enter a password. This is what proves your account is an Admin one.
    - If you are going to be altering things in Task scheduler, start it as Admin
    Start button,
    Windows administrative tools,
    right-click on Task scheduler,
    More,
    Run as Admin,
Click Yes on the Admin prompt that appears.
    - When started this way, TS will accept bubba's password.

And another thing. User accounts can get corrupted. It is a lot easier to resolve matters if you can still log in to an Admin account so make one or two spares & make them local to keep things simple.

Create one or two additional [spare] local, password-protected Admin accounts & write their passwords down somewhere secure yet readily accessible.
Add Local Account or Microsoft Account - TenForumsTutorials
Change to Admin account type- TenForumsTutorials

I create two spare Admin accounts
1 To use during troubleshooting or other investigations where I might end up giving myself additional access permissions.
2 Unused, pristine. User accounts only seem to get corrupted in use so you can be pretty confident that an unused one will be there to rescue you in the future.

Writing down their passwords is as effective as & is a lot cheaper than making 'Password reset disks' [which are only for local accounts anyway]. I always write user account passwords down on a piece of paper that I keep inside one of those dog nametag cylinder things attached to my main keyring -
Here's a [UK] link for some example ID tags https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Barrel-.../dp/B00DEB1JVQ There are lots of available choices but I bought ones that, like these, have a slot in the bottom for me to swing off so I can be confident they won't come apart accidentally while I'm out & about.

    Hey, thanks for the reply.

I ended up changing the way I logon to Windows by switching to a local account sign-in and that pretty much addresses my issues.

And, yes sir, I have an alt local admin account already setup. It's one of the first things I do with a fresh Windows install.

    Thanks again.
