Incorrect Username Appeared Today When I Logged In

went to login to my windows 10 laptop this morning and the wrong username has appeared.

I set up a windows 10 installation for a friend a few months ago and randomly their name has appeared when Ive gone to sign in along with their profile icon.

I have still logged in with my usual PIN and windows has not created another user profile

Im baffled by this and what to do

    Thanks in advance

Perhaps both your user account and the one you set up on that other computer are using the same email address & they've just synced for the first time.

    Thanks Denis

What should I do to check this?

I vaguely remember using my account to set it up i think and then changed it to their account I think?
Or maybe I just changed the username on their laptop?

and how do I rectify the username and profile icon on my laptop?

    TIA

1 I do suggest checking the other computer to confirm the situation before taking any action. I cannot explain your symptoms any other way so I really do think that the same MSAccount is being used on both.

2 On the other computer, add another account.
    - I assume this is going to be an MSAccount-linked user account with your friend's email address but, if your friend does not need any MSAccount facilities, then just make it a local user account.
Add Local Account or Microsoft Account - TenForumsTutorials
    - It can be a standard or Admin user account to suit your friend's needs.
    Change Account Type - TenForumsTutorials
    - Write its password down now - somewhere accessible yet secure.

3 Then create a local, password-protected Admin account on the other computer so that there will always be a way in if the day-to-day account ever gets corrupted.
    - Write its password down now - somewhere accessible yet secure.

4 Then use File explorer to go into the folder C:\Users\<WhateverTheOriginalAccountWasCalled>\Documents, Music, etc to copy across all the saved files into the corresponding folders of the newly-created account. You'll need to use an Admin account to do this and I suggest using the Admin account you created in step #3.

5 Then I suggest just disabling the original account. You could delete it but disabling leaves the decision for a while in case there are any queries later on.
    - You need to positively identify the username of the original account. Run this command in a PowerShell or Command window
    Code:
    net user
    and look at the results.
    - They'll be several entries that Windows created itself so don't alter anything you do not recognise.
    - There will be the name of the original account in a shortened form which is normally the first five characters of the relevant MSAccount's Full Name [the one you see when you log onto it online].
    - Only when you are certain that you have the right username [shortened form], run this command using that username
    Code:
    net user UserNameShortenedForm /active:no
so if the user account was called Bart, the command would be
    Code:
    net user Bart /active:no
    - If you cannot positively identify the original account in the net user results then post those results and I'll talk you through it.
    - If you decide to delete it instead, use the procedure in
    Delete User Account - TenForumsTutorials
but, when you get asked if you want to delete all its files, I suggest you say no and just make a note to do that in a few months.

6 You will probably end up having to help set up your friend's new user account because it will have lost, for example, application settings and downloaded Apps.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Thanks Denis

I had a look and the MSA that I have on my laptop is linked to an email address that I dont really used.

I tried to change the email address in my MSA details to the email that i use frequently but it says I have already created an account with that, which I assume I have but I dont use it.

TBH they only thing I use my MSA for is to log into my w10 laptop with and sometimes with Skype

Should I seek to change the MSA account Im using on my laptop?
If so how can I do that

    Thanks Bart

    Bart,

I have never changed an email address for an MSAccount-linked user account.
    - I have had a look through the Tutorial index [you'll see a link to that at the top of the webpage] and did not see any relevant guidance.
    - I do not use MSAccounts and I regard them with such distrust that I'd always choose to make a new user account on the computer instead of trying to change it.
    - If Skype lets you sign in when you use it [rather than insisting on your already being signed in to an MSAccount-linked user account] then perhaps it would be much simpler just to convert your current computer's user account to a local one.

Thanks Denis I think your suggestion of switching to a local account seems the best idea seeing as I only use the account for this pc and don't use the MSA for anything else.
I assume therefore that breaks the sync with the other laptop if it exists

    TIA

    Bart,

Yes. Only MSAccount-linked user accounts sync.

But that other computer will still use your email address unless you convert that as well.
