    Changing Permission of C:\Windows\WinSxS

I have installed openssh server and need to edit the sshd_config file (as well as copying it before making any changes). The file is in a folder that in turn is in the WinSxS directory. All folders in WinSxs are owned by the Trusted Installer. I have gone through a number of detailed posts on how to include myself, as Administrator, to the ownership but at different points check boxes are greyed out where in the the instructions they are not grey. Any help appreciated on how to access this folder/file to edit.

    Hello @quarkrad,

Have you had a look at this? > Change Permissions of Objects for Users and Groups in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

You didn't ought to need to do that! Did you read this link (or something like it) before installing:
Installing SFTP/SSH Server on Windows using OpenSSH :: WinSCP

It is most unlikely that an installer would put unique files in the WinSxS folder - it usually contains hard links to files that are also visible elsewhere, like %WINDIR%\System32\. If the answer to that is that WinSxS is the folder in which you found the config file, then have another look for it elsewhere. It is especially unlikely that a config file (which by definition may need changing) would resuide in WinSxS - which is locked up for a reason.

Thank you - tried all those options and either the Add or Edit buttons were greyed out.

I wonder if you help me further(?) - getting my head around public and private keys. In linux I use the command ssh-keygen to generate the public and private keys. I notice in windows 10 that:

    1. C:\ProramData\ - the shh folder does not exist
    2. Install OpenSSH server - the C:\ProgramData\ssh folder is created but is empty
    3. In Services: start the OpenSSH SSH Server service
    4. One effect of starting this service is C:\ProgramData\ssh is suddenly populated with a number of files

One of these is files is sshd_config which is familiar as it configures the ssh server. Many other files seem to be public and private keys. Are these the keys I should use if I want to connect to this server? E.g. should I copy, if I want to use ed25519 authentication, the ssh_host_ed25519_key (public and private) and put them into my linux box in order to connect to the windows server from my linux box? It appears the win10 version of OpenSSH auto creates all the public and private key itself as part of the install
