Dad needs administrative account on son's laptop w/o Microsoft account

    Hello,

My son is the lone user of his laptop. It runs Windows 10 v1909. We are finding he is staying up too late and this results in a dysfunctional day after. I have my router locked down against viewing inappropriate content so I am not concerned about this issue. I need administrative control for maintaining the pc properly, establishing time limits for use/non-use. Additionally, since he is currently the only user his account (he does not have a Microsoft account) possess administrative rights. I need to remove these from his account until he is older.

Please advice - I am behind in getting these accounts configured and would like to do so this evening if possible.

Hello @RVC and welcome to TF,

I would lock down all access to the internet after certain hours. If he doesn't give you admin access to his PC, there's not much you can do on the PC side.

Kids are smart, they download movies, videos etc and can watch them offline without internet. Depending on his age, maybe you can ask him to surrender the LT after certain hours. Parenting, what a joy during these times

Check your router for parental controls. On my TP-Link router you can configure time limits for online usage of devices.

@steve108 - My son has administrative rights simple because the laptop (used) had no accounts when I purchased it. He simply turns it on to use it. It is not, or should not be, a question of him not providing me with administrative rights. Yes, he does have problems with wanting - and taking too much screen time on occasion. He is a teenager and we have had his cooperation when we need to take a device for 12-18 months. We have told him he needs to hold the power over this so that we do not provide the corrective crutch.

@Fabler2 - My router has custom firmware but I never thought to check access time settings. I will look into this promptly.

Yes, kids are smart, or should I say deceptive??? Thank you both.

They get smarter the older they get

Make sure you're the only one with the router's password!!

I have router control via MAC address and time schedule , but there's always just download endless crap while they have access and watch if off line.

The best solutions is having a nice loving talk about the reality of life, I've found so far. ( I could not find a heart icon on this forum) ❤

@steve108 - You are correct regarding the discussions. These do work with him. There are periods of time when he lacks self-discipline. Unfortunately, this is also true of many adults so my wife and I regard ourselves as being ahead of the game in this regard. We just need a more complete manifestation of self-control. I will readily admit parenting is an extremely difficult role. College is a few years away so we have much to accomplish in a short period of time.

I hope you have the same experience that I've had. After a ing few years, he finally seems to have come around now. Hopefully it's just a matter of time for your son too. I'm sure we can all conclude it's not easy in this age of electronic distractions, so hang it there both of you and keep the ❤ love and support flowing to him.
