How to merge a User account with the administrator account.

I am a complete fool at this stuff which has perplexed me for years.

I am also neurologically disabled with DCD/dyspraxia - and dyslexia which contributes to difficulties staying focused and following sequences.

I shall try to explain my difficulty.

I want to use the show history procedure across my devices.

I understand I have to do it via Cortana - I followed the links I received -

I am not sure what they were now and tried to sign in as instructed but - I was shown my USER account as separate to that of the Administrator Account -

I want to keep the existing administrator account - which the person who set up my PC years ago simply called "owner" and make my Microsoft account become the Administrator/owner in order to continue with all the settings I now have.

    Have I made any sense?

Can you suggest how I go about this or direct me to a tutorial please?

I do have the May 2010 - 2004 update installed and as far as I am aware my PC has all the windows updates available.

Thank you if you can after any simple steps help.

    Hello Andrew,

Just to verify with you, it sounds like you are wanting to switch your local account named "Owner" that is an administrator account to be a Microsoft account.

If so, you can use the method in the tutorial below to switch it to be a Microsoft account without losing anything, and it will still be an administrator account.

    Andrew,

I'd like to check why you think the accounts are separate because there have been cases of misunderstanding before.

1 So, ignoring everything else you are trying to do just for now [in order to keep things as simple as possible], please describe what makes you think your user account is separate from another account [the one with Admin rights].

    - Include a screenshot if it helps to explain [or just describe/sketch any dialogs that appear]

    - I might be wrong but sometimes a dialog like this one might be involved so you can just refer to this if it is useful

2 I'll probably have to follow up asking for additional info so please can we also do most of this now. I've included detailed instructions just in case you have not done anything like this before. The command just shows you information; it is not doing anything to your computer.

    - Right-click on the Start button and click on Windows Powershell [or, if it appears instead, Command prompt]

    - Type in this command then press the Enter/Return key
    Code:
    net user

    - In the results, click your mouse and drag it over the results until they are all highlighted {they will be highlighted as you move over them}

    - Press the Control and C keys at the same time to copy the selected text

    - Come back here and click your mouse in the Quick reply box then press the Control and V keys at the same time to paste the selected text in a reply

    - I will explain anything you want from all that but thought that it would be best to keep these instructions as brief as possible.

    Errrr..

I was going along OK with the suggestions in the first post - I was not able to enter the Microsoft Account I want to become the Administrator account because I got an error message saying that email address is associated with the device already.

So I removed it and every other email address associated with the PC - to have a clean start.

Entered the Microsoft Account that I wanted to use - then had a prompt to sign in just one more time with the password - I entered the password for the Microsoft account but that was not accepted presumably because it is a different password for the original administator/device sign in account.

So I set about changing it but following the prompts I just ended up changing the Microsoft Account password and so still cannot see how to get into the administrator password.

It is absolutely ridiculously and unnecesarily complicated.

I do use a PIN - but by using the PIN I just get access to the device but not to the settings to change or even better remove altogether the existing adminstrator Local Account Password.

I have answered different questions - have I made any sense?

Thanks to Brink and Denis for the help offered so far - although I cannot make much sense of Denis's questions because I may not have explained myself succinctly.

    Andrew,

If you mean when you get to step 7 below, then you would need to enter the password of the local account instead of for the Microsoft account you are switching to.

Please go ahead and post the full screenshot of that settings page showing everything. Be sure to black out any personal info first though.

Like below instead of just a bit of the left pane. You may need to drag the border of the window over more to see all of it.

...or are you saying your settings page is blank instead of seeing something like below? Does closing and reopening Settings help?
