    Laptop Account Security When Going to Repair Shop

    I have an HP laptop that needs a new powerport (receptacle where power cord plugs into laptop). Bringing it to a local shop. Although there doesn't seem to be any need for it, they asked for the password.

    I created a new local user account with a password for the shop. Does this provide sufficient security for data on other accounts?

    Should I wipe laptop and reinstall Win10 before releasing for repair? Windows has been acting up anyway and a fresh install would probably help. Windows has not been reinstalled in the three years or so since purchase. WinVer is 1903 (laptop has been sitting unused for over a year). Thanks.

    If they have the pc then they can get anything off and see anything by booting Linux a clean install is a good move

    @BIC,
    Do you have an extra old drive you can pop into the PC/install Windows clean with no personal files and pull your current good one out (and replace it after the repair)?

    @steve108 good idea. I probably do have some old drives awaiting disposal. In this case, Windows has some issues anyway. When I first tried to reinstall OEM Win10 with built-in HP software, wouldn't do it.

    I just tried using a bootable USB flash drive with Win10 on it. The flash drive works on a Dell desktop, but not working on the HP. Seems I can't change boot drive order.

    Disregard, got Win10 installing from USB now.

    HP BIOS up to date? Try disabling secure boot on the HP bios. Anything useful here: https://store.hp.com/us/en/tech-take...windows-10-pcs

    I see Microsoft forces you to start Win10 with an account now. One more reason to be annoyed at them.

    Since I was forced to insert Microsoft account login credentials, will the shop be able to access those credentials? Should I reinstall Windows again after it comes back from shop? Thanks.

    Apparently you can bypass that by disconnecting PC from internet during install - this would piss me off too. What's next, force me to use Onedrive?

    That's what I would do in your situation. Let them fix the hardware then do a clean install of Win 10 when you get it back.

    Before doing the clean install, disconnect the internet entirely. During the install answer no, dismiss, skip, and turn off everything they offer.
