Granted system32 Admin to access. How to revoke?

I went to the system32 folder (and then others inside it), and I was prompted twice along the way that I needed permission to access the folder(s) (the Admin box with the shield popped up). I clicked allow/ok, and was able to do what I needed. I then closed the file explorer folder since I did what I needed. I always double check what I did, so I went back to check it, but this time (and all times after), I don't get the Admin prompt box anymore. Why? Shouldn't it prompt every time I try to access it? How do I get that back? I rebooted thinking it was a session thing, but I still don't get prompted. Why would it prompt only the first time you try to access it? I'm on 1909 if that make a difference for anything.

If you are part of the Administrators group, you won't be prompted again.

The System32\Config folder is one such restricted folder. You clicked 'Continue' to the question 'Do you want permanent access?' which is why you never got asked again.



Your user account was added to the permissions. To revoke access, right-click on the folder and select Properties. On the Security tab click Edit. Here you can see that my user account (named Owner) has been added, I can select it and click Remove to return permissions to their original state.



Or you could just leave it as it is. Having access does not of itself do any harm. It does however mean you could unintentionally delete something, that would do harm.

If you revoke access, you'll just be prompted again every time you need to access System32.

That's what permissions do...allow or restrict access.

Use a Standard account if you're concerned about it.

Thanks for the replies. That was it. It's been so long since I had to mess with anything at that level (probably even two PCs ago). I was getting a log error because my TileDataLayer folder was missing the Database folder (update glitch from what I found). I'm the only user, and I see where I can change it back to default now if I want. It just seemed like a glitch of it's own at the time it didn't prompt me again. You guys rock.

System32 is not actually restricted for read access, the USERS group has Read & execute, List folder contents, and Read access by default. Anyone, standard user or admin can see its contents. Its a few of its sub-folders that are more restricted.

I'm just going to leave them as is now. I can't remember what other one prompted me, so I don't want to go changing permissions on ones I shouldn't. I know config did, and then one other after. I went this deep:

As mentioned, permissions are used to grant or restrict access.

Depends on what you want to accomplish.

Just removing your user account from the permissions of Config should be sufficient to protect you from yourself.

Should I remove my entire account, or just write access?
