I inherited a computer but have no login password. I've tried several helps from the web without success. When I turn the computer on I get the password prompt screen.

You can reset the password by using a recovery tool like Lazesoft Password Recovery. You'll need a computer and a spare USB stick laying around. Then you can just boot into the software and reset the local admin password from there. Or, you can use Hiren's BootCD PE which is a long standing repair and diagnostic toolkit you put on a USB stick that has Windows PE ready to boot into. You will find the same Lazesoft Password Recovery installed on this as well but the benefit of downloading the much bigger Hiren's BootCD is you also have a fairly complete solution should this or any other issues appear in the future. There's dozen of tools pre-installed for all eventualities and it's my opinion it's best to have a complete solution laying around for future use than a standalone solution for one particular problem right now. Anyway, the choice is yours but this is how you can reset the local admin password.

When you do reset it you should be able to login straight away without needing a password. You can then go to User Accounts and set a new password. Seeing as it's a computer that has no doubt belonged to someone else you could avoid doing all this and simply perform a clean install. This will seperate what you do on the computer in the near future from whatever has been done in it from the previous owner so that you start with a fresh Windows installation as well as a clean and formatted drive. Also it's much better for both privacy and security as it ties up any loose ends from the previous owner in terms of what was on the drive and any changes made during the previous ownership. This is what would happen if you bought this computer from a reputable computer shop. Ideally you should completely wipe the drive several times over to completely sanitize it before installing another OS. The downside of this is you will wipe all traces of the OS from the drive which means ensuring you have your own Windows installation medium ready after the wipe has completed as there will be no install process available to you if you completely wipe the entire drive.

I would also remove your email address from this thread. Think about your privacy, and moreover, your security. You don't know and cannot vouch for the people who see this thread and now as a result potentially can use your email address for a number of purposes. The most worrying purpose would be to phish you and this would be far more easier to do if and when they can build a bigger picture of who you are from what they find online. If your email address can be found elsewhere on the web publicly the more that can be tied back to you. Here they have a thread about a computer they could use to trick you into downloading something which will cause you more problems than being locked out of a computer. So be careful sharing your personal information with strangers on the internet.

I would have thought that this is the ONLY option for any hand-me-down/over device, irrespective of password problems.

Like a used car, you inherit all the problems of the previous user.
On all my old computers I wipe or replace the main drive and do a clean install.
