It sound like you have two problems.

One your Microsoft account and two you can't add your virginmedia.com account.

Your Microsoft Account, is it a hotmail, outlook.com, msn or live domain?

Are you using it to log into your machine?

I have a local account because I disconnected the ethernet cable while installing win 10. I seem to have 3 microsoft accounts (made at different times over the years). I have a gaming account connected to xbox live (on pc) stats and thats the one I want to connect to my local user account to ensure I can upgrade my PC in future and retain my win 10 licence (@blueyonder.co.uk). I seem to have associated my local account with a @yahoo.com email as windows wanted me to go through an account fix process using that email and refused to accept the one I wanted to use (gave that error). I have a third @blueyonder.co.uk microsoft account that I only know about because firefox remembers it.

I login with a local account, and I don't use any microsoft apps in fact I don't even use their start menu because I like having my programs organised by category rather than letter or number (open-shell).

    Okay.

    Sorry for the questions.

If you've never used a Microsoft Account what do you mean when you say you associated your local account to a yahoo account.

    Where do you see this?

I also don't understand how Firefox is displaying an account as a Microsoft account.

I usually recommend people use accounts that they can always own. Not being from the UK I don't know what blueyonder is but if paid ISP then what happens when you switch. Sure you can update communication settings in account but it becomes confusing.

I've already been down that path. My ISP that I am with was the same ISP that my Dad is with. I set up the emails and no one else had access despite this, they can't be transfered unless me and my Dad are the same person. So yes I have to change emails but its not urgent as my Dad is still paying the ISP bills.

Firefox remembers my logins. If I type about:logins into the url bar it takes me to a searchable list which is duplcated on my phone with firefox lockbox.

    Settings> Accounts > Email & accounts
That is where I've seen my first email pop up. Its actually a very old throw away junk mail email. I want to use a different email and that's where I get an error. Just tried again with my login details for the email and same error.

    Thanks.

If you go to account.microsoft.com you will be presented with a sign in page. This is a Microsoft page and while email addresses are use as "Names" you are logging into your Microsoft Account.

I would start with what ever account you want to be your Microsoft Account. Enter address and password. If it coughs on password resolve it through the standard I don't remember routines.

Once in and password in hand go back to Windows 10 settings and switch your local sign in to using this Microsoft Account. You said you've never log in with an MSA on this machine, correct?

Once switched to a MSA you should see a "verify" link. Click and follow process. Once verified this MSA should "own" the digital license.

    See this tutorial.

Link Microsoft Account to Windows 10 Digital License

Once we have this done we can look into email.
