Unwanted user account in start window can't be deleted

When I restart Windows 10, I get two user accounts on my startup screen. The first is my name and I use a pin to log in. The second I have never created and shows up first on startup. The user account does not show up in the Control Panel. I've tried to use the command netplwiz to remove log in needs as stated in an earlier post on this forum. But nothing changes. The extra account is still there and I still have to use a login for the normal account. I want to get rid of the unknown account and remove the need to login with a password or pin. Where did this unknown account come from, why is it showing up on the startup screen and not in the Control Panel users list, and how do I get rid of it?

Please open the Command Prompt by typing cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.

Execute the net user command alone to show a very simple list of every user account, active or not, on the computer you're currently using.

The /delete switch removes the specified username from the system.

    Code:
    net user nadeema /delete
Above command will delete nadeema user account.

    Didn't work FreeBooter

FreeBooter, I did as you suggested and the command was accepted. However, when I restarted the computer, not only did both user accounts show up at the start, now it won't take any of my passwords to get into the computer for either account. How do I get out of this? I'm contacting you from my iPad because my laptop no longer works.

    • Boot your computer with Hiren’s BootCD PE.
    • Goto Start Menu -> Securiy -> Passwords -> NT Password Edit
    • Open your SAM file (It is usually located in C:\Windows\System32\config\SAM).
    • Click your username and the click ‘Change password’. To set a password, type your password both ‘New password’ and ‘Verify’ fields and then click to ‘OK’. To remove the password, leave both ‘New password’ and ‘Verify’ fields blank and then click to ‘OK’.

That username was an example and needed to be replaced with the actual username to be deleted!

    I hope this helps!

    Rachael,

1 What is the name of the unknown, unwanted user account?

2 Does the unknown, unwanted user account show up in the list produced in response to the [Command prompt] command net user
    - If there are any unknown entries in the response, post the list so they can all be explained or identified as suspect

3 Is your proper account [your "name"] a local account or is it an MSAccount? {If it is an MSAccount do not attempt to change it using the HirensBootCD mentioned above}.

    Try3 answer

Both accounts show on the start screen show up now with my full name. One has my picture I set up for the account in its icon (call it 'A') the other ('B') is blank. 'A' is the one I use. 'B' is the one that showed up as the unknown name (partial email name) before I did the "fix" that screwed everything up. The 'A' account is asking for my MS account password. The second allows me to choose sign in options of "local or domain account password" or "Microsoft password". Neither works. I even changed my MS account password in case something had gone wrong. Still nothing. I'm thinking the only way out of this to is to reinstall Windows and start from scratch. I have all my data backed up because the computer just came back from being worked on by Dell but that's a pain in the thuchkus.

So I take it that you are now able to log in successfully as A.

Does B or any unknown account name show up in the list produced in response to the [Command prompt] command net user
    - If there are any unknown entries in the response, post the list so they can all be explained or identified as suspect

Try3 - can't log onto either account. No passwords work. Started up successfully in safe mode but can't do anything there either.

    - - - Updated - - -

I think somehow the 2nd unknown account was linked to my main account and when I deleted the unknown account, it totally screwed up my main account. I can't even log in now in Troubleshoot mode as Administrator because it doesn't recognize my password. This is all FUBAR now (sorry, Navy for 9 years during Vietnam).
