Getting error message: The password is incorrect, Try again

    Hello,

i was doing some cleanup and updates today and after a restart, it doesn't recognize my password anymore.

I have an Aesus laptop, windows 10

I have changed my password using another computer and still cannot log in.

The screen shows my name, the password field and 3 icons in the bottom right (Internet, ease of access and the power button). When i click on the internet, it is not connected to the internet, only showing airplane mode. I have tried to connect directly from the router to the PC using an ethernet connection with no luck.

I have tried to do a safe mode boot, reset this PC, and other functions with no success because it ask for the password.

Not sure what to do more, any help will be appreciated.

    Thank you

[1] Can you please tell us what actions you performed when you did the cleanup?
[2] Is it your User Password it doesn't recognize or some other Password?
[3] What do you mean when you say . . .
    "
I have changed my password using another computer and still cannot log in."
    [4]
If you reset this PC, I assume that you DON'T have any System Restore Points that you can use?
[5] What other functions are you referring to?
[6] Have you tried running SFC?

    1) I was doing a cleanup of the hard drive, checked for disk errors using CHKDSK (did not find any), checked for extensions in Chrome and explorer, checked for problem entries in device manager, checked for damaged files using SFC (did not find any), used the MSConfig (under the boot tab, i do remember checking the safe boot and selecting minimal) and defrag the system.

    2) It is the user password, first password that you need to enter when you reboot the computer

    3) I have reset my password through http://account.live.com as maybe i was thinking i was entering the wrong password, but new password is not working as well, used the info from this link https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-881b18d2493c

    4) i am not sure about this point, when i want to do it, it ask for the password before continuing

    5) The other functions that i have tried since not able to log in are: safe mode in startup settings, system restore, startup repair and command prompt in advanced options.

    Hope it helps

    Thank you for the assistance

also one thing to point is that before today, every time that i was starting the laptop, i was entering a 4 digit number as the password and it will connect me automatically but since today after the reboot, i have entered that same 4 digit number but this time i had to press enter and then get the message the password is incorrect

Now on the laptop with the issue, the username is already there, i just need to enter the password. Also when i try to do a startup repair, i see my name, my hotmail email address and it want me to enter the password for the account.

Before reading what I was ready to post, please confirm: you have your ASUS laptop(?) with the original issue of this thread, you have another computer and now also your work computer: please verify.

    Moving on
Post #1 “I have changed my password using another computer and still cannot log in”
--- Are you using your same Microsoft account on that other computer?

Post #3 “3) I have reset my password through http://account.live.com as maybe i was thinking i was entering the wrong password, but new password is not working as well, used the info from this link https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-881b18d2493c“
--- I can’t tell by your description: are you able to log-in to your same Microsoft account on this other computer?

“i was entering a 4 digit number as the password and it will connect me automatically but since today after the reboot, i have entered that same 4 digit number but this time i had to press enter and then get the message the password is incorrect”
--- Is that “4 digit number” your password or your PIN number?
--- If that is your PIN number, you cannot change your password w/o getting into your actual Microsoft account.

    In this link you included
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-881b18d2493c
Scroll down and note the section
Usually when you setup a Pin password for an account, then you will be provided with an option called Sign-in options on login screen. By clicking on it, will allow you to select either Pin password or actual Microsoft account password to login. So, please check with that option on the login screen to use Pin password.
My note: Notice you need the actual Microsoft account password.
--- I’m not 100% sure about this, but you might have to uninstall your 4-digit Pin number if that’s what it is before being able to change the actual Microsoft account password.
First, confirm the correct password is getting entered with some simple checks before resorting to more extreme measures:
    1. Click on the "eye" icon in the password field and view the password before hitting Enter.
    2. Verify the keyboard layout wasn’t changed during the upgrade, causing you to enter unexpected characters when
typing. Press the Windows Key and the Spacebar at the same time to check the keyboard language and layout.
While holding the Windows Key, press the spacebar repeatedly to change the keyboard layout.
    3. From another device, verify that you can successfully sign into http://account.live.com with the same
    Microsoft account email and password.
If issue persists, reset the password using the exact Email address for recovering the password which you have setup at the time of Microsoft account creation. In simple, the alternative email address you have given for password recovery during account setup. Also try using "I know my password, but can't sign in" option during password reset and see if it helps you.
My note: Do you remember the “alternative email address you have given for password recovery during account setup”
--- In addition, can you have a forgotten password code sent to that “alternative email address you have given for password recovery during account setup” or even more conveniently to your cell phone?

Last but not least: is there a reason that you were doing so much “maintenance” adjustments all at once?

    Hello,

i have 2 laptops, the Aesus and the work laptop.

i have used the work laptop to go on http://account.live.com and changed the password there. The work laptop has his own login (company login).

Regarding the 4 digit number, not sure if it is the pin or password, i was just entering the numbers in the field and get connected to have access to chrome, explorer and all other applications.

i was doing those maintenance as the laptop was slow and follow some instruction to clean the laptop.

Please let me know if you need more clarification.

    Thank you

When you want to log in to your ASUS laptop, does it look like this with PIN or Password in there?
Getting error message: The password is incorrect, Try again-pinsigninoptions.png

--- If it says PIN, use the sign-in key to change it to Password. Then try the newly created password.
--- I hope I’m wrong but I suspect that your newly created password might not work yet.

Go through the options in this article and select the options in there on how to fix your password issue.
--- I haven’t had to deal with a password issue in my Microsoft account.
--- But you need to know when/if you are working with a PIN “number” as well as know your actual Microsoft account password.
--- Pay attention to what is “alternative email address you have given for password recovery during account setup”
--- In some cases, you can have a code sent to your cell phone also.
--- In my case I have an assigned code that has been sent to my cell phone.

When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...t-cant-sign-in
--- There are number of options and you will need to determine which one applies in your case.

Do you create system image backups? If you don’t, consider doing so on a schedule that suits you.
--- In the future do that before taking on a project on your laptop.
You should also have Windows 10 install media available.

    Hello

here is how my screen look like
Getting error message: The password is incorrect, Try again-2020-03-24-10_36_15-photos.png

i am a bit confused between the PIN and password. Before the issue i was entering 4 digit number (i am guessing that's the PIN), since the issue, that PIN wasn't working, so i went into Microsoft account to change the password, i tried to enter numbers but it says needs to be a combination of letters and numbers for the password. Changed the password, went back to my Aesus laptop to enter that new password to get the message The password is incorrect, Try again

    Thank you for the assistance

"it says needs to be a combination of letters and numbers for the password"
    I forgot about that.
Whatever the root cause of your problem is unknown, you will have to start over.
Right now the main drive needs to be focused only on the password. Don't attempt anything about using a PIN yet.
--- Do you have a cell phone that you can use to help out in your situation as well the work laptop?

Review the When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...t-cant-sign-in

Have a notebook handy when you start doing what you need to do and write down all settings you use along the way such as, “alternative email address you have given for password recovery during account setup” and having messages sent to that alternative email address. Or create a file on your work laptop to keep up with what fails and what works.
--- Since you had started to use your work laptop, you might want to use that as a consistent means of carrying out what you need to do.
--- Make sure you don't get ahead of yourself. When you start a certain set of instructions but things are not going well, don't discard anything yet, stay where you are and post the situation for help.

The new password you created isn't going to work yet.
Can you create your Microsoft account on your work laptop or cell phone and troubleshoot it from there?
I have helped people who had to verify their Microsoft account but that's very easy to do when the password is known but as I mentioned I haven't had to get into doing the password recovery process.
