PIN usage on a Win 8.1 to Win 10 upgrade ?

This morning I had task to upgrade one of my nieces desktop system from 8.1 to 10 home edition. The upgrade went just fine, took 2 hours (Single core 2.9ghz cpu), but at completion it always wanted a PIN to log in. I asked the owner if she has ever used a pin - her reply was no and that she always used a password on Win 8.1. Yes the password does work, but the first prompt you get to log in is for a PIN ?

We proceeded to change a unknown PIN, which forced us into deleting it first because to change it you need to know what the old one is, and then creating one.

My question is "Where did W10 find that pin and wanted it" ?

It will normally ask you for username and password then try and force you to use a pin as its more secure

Since the 8.1 system never had a pin or the owners didn't know of one, did the w10 upgrade create one ? Our problem was what was that new pin ?
