How to get original user 'name' back after Win 10 changed to 'name.000

This is old and has worked from XP on up.

Before doing any of the following, create a new System Restore point.

Sounds like your user profile has lost it's connection with where it's data is stored. If you are comfortable with using regedit, do the following:

Open a Elevated Command Prompt and enter the following:
net user administrator /active:yes
exit

This enables the hidden Administrator account.

Now boot to Safe Mode and login as Administrator.

What you need to do is direct your profile back to the ProfileImagePath of the original profile.

Click on Start then Run. type regedit and press Enter or click OK.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Once there, you will see the SID's listed for all of the profiles on the machine.
Within the Key for each SID there is an entry called "ProfileImagePath" that will look like
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\UserName...

Scroll through the SID's until you find the one with the screwy name, like
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\youruserid.000

This is just an example, could be something else weird.

Just edit the Key to remove the ".000", and it will point the user back to the old profile...

I'm don't know which one of Brink's tutorials you are referring to, can you post a link to it please.

For me, System Restore either works or it doesn't I don't know of any tweek to make it work.

Is your original account folder still there under C:\Users or has it all been moved under one of the new temp account names?

System Restore does not 'complete' all the time. Most often it's a problem with antivirus, etc., mine being Bitdefender.

As to my original account folder C:/users/name, it is still there - but only with 2 files AppData & Search (none of which have my files). The add'l folder, C:/users/name.000 does seem to have most of stuff.

The 5 new temp files are mostly empty, except for some empty normal named file folders like music, etc.. Names are: TEMP, TEMP.T-computer, TEMP.T-computer.000, TEMP.T-computer.000.001 & TEMP.T-computer.000.001.002.

So following Brink's tutorial and renaming C:/users/name.000 to C:/users/youraccounbaname in the registry doesn't work?

Do you have everything backed up just ion case things continue to go wrong? At some point you may have to give in and reinstall, either a Clean Install or try a reset saving your files and folders.

Looks like that part is to see when the temp profiles were created and the SIDs that they were created under. @Brink could explain more. Hopefully he will stop by soon.

Where do you stand now? Are your files available in any of the profiles under the Users directory?

The Event Viewer info in the tutorial is just for reference to find more details about it if wanted. It can also be used to help ID the user account name and SID affected by the error.

The main thing you would want to try is to change the registry settings as Rich posted above to use the correct user profile folder path for your account to see if that may fix it.

If Name.000 is the correct profile folder and has just been renamed somehow, you could changing the name of this folder back to its original name using the method in the tutorial below.
