    Corrupt User Profile?

A little while ago, I had a power outage whilst downloading an update. This caused fairly substantial file damage which after much work, I have more-or-less got everything back.

The only real issue remaining is there is a four minute delay after Welcome screen to Desktop. I believe this may be down to corrupt profile. I have already gone down the sfc/scannow and dism route and downloaded the ISO file to work from.

I created a second profile and everything booted as it should, with the exception of no apps available when I hit the Start Button. When I copy contents of the Users directory from original to copy profile, I end up with a slow boot again and still no apps. I assume that something in the Users directory is messed up.

Basically I need to either find and repair the busted profile, or create a new profile with everything in place and ditch the messed up one.

    Any ideas please?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi, analysis is possible, using the Windows Permance Toolkit:

Download and Install Windows Performance Toolkit in Windows 10

This produces detailed graphical representations including the boot sequences.
You can find examples of its use with screenshots by searching the site for
    Windows Permance Toolkit
    Windows Permance Analyser

It will also be worth running
    chkdsk C: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt, given what has happened

and if that scan reports problems run
    chkdsk c: /F
    which requires a reboot.

You might also like to try comparing:
    - a clean boot
    - creating a new user profile an logging in with that.

    However I am concerned about
When I copy contents of the Users directory from original to copy profile
as you can't/shouldn't simply copy C:/Users
    if that's what you mean.

For some reason, left clicking my Start Button has stopped working, although I have a menu with the right button.

I have run c:scan and found nothing.
I have run sfc again, and found nothing.
I have run dism again, and found nothing.
I have run and installed the latest updates, and nothing has changed.

I feel the only recourse is to trash my installation and reinstall, as my patience is wearing thin with it, having spent hours trying to recover this and getting nowhere.

Here's how to get control in most circumstances and help prevent you needing to do a clean install in the future:

    a. Clean install
    b. As early as you can, create a base disk image using e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) to external storage.
Having a Windows disk image means you can restore Windows to a previous good state (and everything on C: too as the whole content of imaged partitions are restored).

So if your installation becomes corrupt, your disk fails, your PC unbootable- you can still recover- quickly and without tech help.

Same goes for any imaged disk or partition.

Disk imaging is repeatedly recommended on this forum.
    c. Plan for your personal data to be on another disk or partition as far as possible- so it's not affected by restoring an image of Windows.
    d. Continue installing and configuring keeping a simple text record of changes so they are easily reproducible
    e. At a suitable point, update your disk image (smaller, faster differential image).
    f. Repeat (d) & (e) until configuration complete.

Thereafter maintain the practice so you always have a reasonably current disk image.

When you upgrade, create a new base disk image.

    ===================================================
I suspect that whatever you did copying the User folder may have done too much damage.

In general, a very useful repair method to fix Windows is an in-place upgrade repair install using an iso of the same base build. This keeps all progs and data. It does not fix user profile problems.

FYI: I used this only once in the past to fix a profile issue:

Thanks very much for that. It seemed to have solved my profile issue, but everything isn't quite as it should be, as a few things are still not working, such as Paint.

Check if that's the same in a new user profile; if so, then again, suggest an in-place upgrade repair install.

You mean "Classic Paint" or do you mean "Paint 3D" ?

What version of windows is installed. [Winkey+R] then type winver and press Enter.
